    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed it a lot, having the opportunity to learn a lot about the company and industry was very rewarding, and it was nice to spend the day with like minded people. It was interesting, and we were kept busy which meant we were able to do a lot of different things during the day.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt like we were all valued and that the company genuinely wanted us all to be there and to come back in future and apply for jobs and internships. I had been chosen to go on the discovery day, and the fact that so few people were accepted into it and we had lots of talks and meetings made me feel very valued.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • The day was guided very well, it was all highly structured and there was never a moment where I wasn't sure what I was supposed to be doing or what would happen next, the people running it always made it clear what we should do if we had any issues.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • We spend a lot of time on answering the competency questions that get asked of us in applications to pretty any job, and what exactly it is that companies are looking for as the answers. As well as this we did a session on improving interview skills, and these are both incredibly valuable skills.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Everything happened on time at the exact time that it was supposed to without it feeling rushed, the timetable was stuck to rigidly but all the talks and sessions still had room for questions at the end, and we had plenty of structured breaks as well.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • We all arrived there a little bit tired from our journeys, but once we started getting into the icebreakers and the sessions everyone began to open up and be a bit more cheerful. It was nice being around a lot of other students who are career focused and want to learn more.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Considering we were just some undergraduate students, the company invested in us a lot. We had workshops on answering the difficult questions that come up in interviews and countless applications, and had small group interviews with members of staff.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • We spend an hour at lunchtime networking with some BP employees over lunch, some were recent graduates and some had worked there for many years. This meant any questions I had about what life was like at the company were answered in detail, and I got a good idea of what it means to work there.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The company's ethos and culture is easily understood, it is written on walls, and told to you by everyone. In particular the attention to safety is highly visible and comfortingly obvious, we were always briefed on what we needed to do in the event of fire and where to go.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • I now know exactly what jobs are like and what working for BP is like, as well as gaining a valuable insight into the oil and gas industry as a whole. The insight day has definitely pointed me in a direction for my career path, and helped me see some of the opportunities that are out there.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • My train expenses were covered.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • We met lots of different members of the company, some gave us talks about what it is they have got up to in the company, we were given tours of the labs, and then over lunch we were able to network with a variety of different employees and hear about some of the experiences they have had.

    5/5

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • Over lunch we were able to network with a variety of different employees and hear about some of the experiences they have had. As this was only a one day thing, there was not really any need for social events, but we did all do an icebreaker when we arrived, and then played a game involving the oil industry later on.

    4/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • We had some talks from the leaders of the women's society, and the LGBT society among others. During lunch the employees told us about the gym, and the other excellent sports facilities that are available at the BP site, and made it clear that all these facilities are available to employees whenever they have free time and want to have a go, during lunch or after work etc.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Yes, because one day is not a huge commitment, and it was a very valuable insight into what the industry and the company is like. I learnt a lot of valuable skills, that will be transferable into any job, and it's something interesting to put on my Cv to show I have gone above and beyond my degree.
