The Role
The SL placement provided excellent insight into work in the nuclear industry and the precautions associated with engineering work in this sector
All of my colleagues treated me with a helpful and friendly attitude; always willing to help me if necessary, The work I undertook was used alongside existing engineering procedures as an aid and in many cases as part of the process.
I was given regular help and guidance by my supervisor who was always available for contact and advice
Business ranged from week to week depending on the maintenance regimes being carried out; in the most case I was satisfied with the work load
I was allowed to undertake a number of high priority tasks including plant modification proposals and failure investigations which were used by the engineering team
The internship provided me with excellent professional skills including meeting and presentation behaviour/etiquette, as well as learning new engineering skills such as EFD reading
The Company
Everyone in the office got along well and the atmosphere of friendship was excellent throughout the site. Help was never far away and colleagues always demonstrated a friendly, approachable nature
There was difficulty providing security details which were obviously essential due to the nature of the site. Information distribution seemed very varied among the interns and in many cases communication could have been greatly improved.
With security clearance requirement, an initial investment is made in all new starters, however the access to training courses, online courses, educational courses and tours was widespread and easy to access.
Financial Bonus
Company Parties/Events
Above 25 days holiday
Reduction in employee wage, loss of accrued holiday time and mostly the distance of SL from where I live has made justification of moving to cumbria for the purpose of a job with SL difficult. However, a job at the Risey site would be more suited to my needs.
The Culture
There were many social events and tours set up which made socialising easy and enjoyable
Cost of renting in the area was relatively expensive and distance/poor transport links made exploration tricky
There was relatively rowdy nightlife in Egremont, however it mostly locals rather than SL employees
Regular bulletins made employees aware of local clubs and SL sports groups
