The Role
This is an amazing company to work for! The work is fun and the other engineers are very friendly. This is the dream job for me! I prefer being here compared to being at university!! The work life balance is very good as we have full flexi time which allows us to come and go as we please (obviously with our manager’s permission!)
I was not just making tea - I was doing actual work and it was appreciated. My colleagues definitely appreciated the work that I was doing! I was not just treated as “a student” but as a fully fledged engineer that was able to do proper tasks. This was very uplifting and encouraging.
The area that we work in is very specialised and this requires a large amount of both theoretical and practical knowledge that was not taught as part of my degree. My manager was very understanding of this and assisted me with getting acquainted. I was also not just left in an office to work – I was always directed with what I should be doing.
At the start of my placement I was relatively lightly loaded work wise (due to the nature of the company). Towards the end of the placement I was given a lot of work and this was very good! On average I was relatively well loaded but sometimes you get a really busy day. Overtime is available though!
As stated earlier I was not just making tea or doing paper work – I was doing real work! I was given real and critical tasks to do and the outcome was expected to be accurate and professional (which it was). I know that on some placements with other companies, people are given silly jobs to do – this does not happen here!
The placements that I have done with this company have helped massively with my degree work and helped mold me into the engineer that I am now. I am now top of my class when it comes to writing reports and doing practical work – knowledge and experience from here has enabled me to do this!
The Company
I was in an office of two so it was usually quiet but I got on very well with my office mate. There is a really good and friendly atmosphere all over the company. We also went out to do some social events as a block as well which was great fun!
My only issue with this company is that the HR department are very slow/bad at keeping potential employees informed and in contact. Sometimes I had to call multiple times to get my emails responded to – this is something that they could definitely work on. With regards to the placement when I was actually at the company it was great! (once I was here!)
I was offered a number of training courses in related subjects to my work (although I was unfortunately not able to attend due to logistics). The amount of training available here is amazing – if you need to learn about something, the company will assist you as best it can! They will also buy any training materials that you require for your work.

I really want to work here when I graduate! This place 100% fits me and I really hope that I get a job here in the future! It is a great place to work and they are always actively recruiting good scientists and engineers! They also allow employees to easily move around the organisation.
The Culture
There is a full new starters / new students scheme in place which allows students and new graduates to meet up in a social setting. This is great fun and usually heavily subsidised by the company – for example barbeques, quiz nights, pub nights, bowling. Lots of good fun if you like that sort of thing!
Mid Kent is relatively good when it comes to going out for fun in the evening (compared to London which is what I am used to!). House and rent prices are quite good if you know where to look! A large number of students get shared houses which end up being very good value
There a lot of good pubs around this area and we have visited most of them. Not really sure about clubs/bars etc as that’s not my type of thing. There were always lots of things to do in the evening, either in the local town or in villages very close. The experienced students usually know somewhere!
I was living at home (university home) so I mostly occupied myself with my usual activities on the weekend. I know that there are lots of things to do in the local area (clubs, music groups, churches, etc) and you are very close to London if you get bored! Usually you will find that someone else in your block does something that you are also interested in
