    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I loved working for Boots. The atmosphere was really welcoming and I felt valued - I didn't feel like an intern, I felt like I was one of the team from day 1.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues trusted me with really important work and I felt there was the structure there to really help me take on as many opportunities as I could. Everyone in the business was happy to take 10 minutes to talk to me about their job role, regardless of whether I knew them and worked with them. There seems to be a great culture of talent development, if that is something you want to push for.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My line manager always took the time to give me feedback on my work. I had great 1 on 1 sessions with my manager and any results I asked my manager to support me on were always followed up.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had 2 projects I was working on throughout my time at Boots. That involved scheduling my own meetings with different departments and doing independent work. Alongside that, I did small ad-hoc research tasks and shadowed my manager in their meetings.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given the responsibility of a whole project to myself, which I led and my manager supervised. She gave me advice but it was on me to drive the work and make sure it progressed steadily. My manager was always there to answer questions, but the responsibility was on me to create a strategy and organise meetings to communicate the project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have a much greater understanding and awareness for commercial business and communications. It has helped put some of my learning into context, but I have also widened my knowledge and it is much more practical. My communication skills and confidence levels have risen, and I have improved how I manage my time and juggle different projects. The scheme has helped me to understand where I want to gain further experience and the kind of culture that fits my values in the workplace.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was friendly and very open. There is a culture of meetings in the business, so it was common for lots of people to be away at their desk for a meeting, or to have a small meeting around their desk. It helps if you're able to work in a slightly noisy environment as the office was always busy with people coming and going, but it is something I picked up quickly so shouldn't be a concern. Once a week we would have a get-together in the whole office, with tea and cake, and every couple of weeks small teams would go out for breakfast or order food in for lunch.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • We had weekly group meetings with our Learning and Development coordinator, who was always available to answer emails or talk on the phone. I asked for regular feedback which was always given, and within the placement there was a mid-placement review, and at the end of my project we had a structured meeting to hand over any of my unfinished work, to make sure the project continued.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were really invested in. I had 1:1 value sessions, to think about my development at the company but also further afield after my internship ended. We had 2 days of training at the beginning of the placement, where we met some of the business' leaders in the Global Brands department. It was fantastic to get this insight into the business and to get time with the top level of leaders in WBA.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Company Parties/Events

    Staff Sales/Staff Shop

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future prospects at the company are very appealing. The summer placement creates a pathway to be invited onto the Graduate Scheme if you liked the company, and the company thought you were a good match. Regardless of whether you are offered the Grad scheme or not, if you drive for it you are given plenty of opportunities to network within the company and make contacts that will be valuable in the future.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I think the social aspects vary according to the team you work in. I worked in a team of mixed ages. There was myself and one other intern of my age and a few others in the team that were quite young- we always ate lunch together and had a few evenings for dinner and drinks whilst I was there. Beyond the team I worked in, there were not much of a regular social team, but the office always came together to celebrate birthdays in the office, and in my 10 weeks there, there was a company fundraising day in the grounds.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was reasonable as the job was based in Nottingham. I lived at home and commuted into work.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There is a good range of nightlife in Nottingham - it is a student-y city so is a great place for young people to live. It is quite a small city but has great independent bars as well as all the chains and clubs.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • I did not get involved with much outside of work - although there were football teams and sports classes you could be involved in.
