About You
The Insight was a 10 week long internship. It was very enjotable as the peopel were friendly and they welcomed me into the team from the first day. I got to know them outside the office as well as inside. I got to know a range of business areas within Tesco, including GM, food, charity.
I felt that I was valued as I was given proper work and had my own responsibilties. For example, I had 3 differnt projects throughout the internship and within that had daily tasks which I could get on with. My work impacted tesco stores and it was great knowing that what i was doing was making a real difference in terms of sales and profit.
I received a large amount of guidance from my line manager and the graduate scheme participant who was incharge of me. They let me ask any questions and were very patient. HR also were very open and we could go to them with any problems we had. We had support sessions whic were drop in as well if we had any issues.
I study Psychology at univeristy, so doing a 10 week internship at tesco wasnt so valuable to my studies. In terms of university, the internship will help with organisation and time prioritisation, but not with lecture content. I do not want to go into psychology after univeristy so this did not matter at all.
The Company
The general atmosphere was very good during my internship with Tesco. The office was lively and people were chatting. The dress code was smart causal so it was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. We also went out and got to know each other, which made me more confortable and allowed me to make friends.
The company invested a lot into us in terms of personal training. We had around 7 development days, which were in hotels or other locations. here we received talks from differnt people in the business and gained training is specific areas e.g. public speaking and how to get noticed. this will help in any carreer and was very useful.
Yes, I saw my collegues working every day and the work that they had to do. I saw the challenges that they faced as well so gained an insight into the actual life of a person who worked at the Tesco head offices. I think that a full time role would be more stressful that what i was doing, but I wouldnt be surprised with very much.
The content was very useful beacuse it showed me that I can go into retail if i would like beacuse I do find it interesting. It also showed me that work is very differnet from univeristy life and that i have to find something passionate that I would like to do beacuse in order to work hard you need to love what you do.
Everything Else
Yes, HR told us to get in contact with other poeple in differnt areas. I was working in books, but met with food and charity people and found out what they did in the company. Spending time in food was great beacues its so differnet to books. i went to a salad factory and saw the processes within food which are different.
The social opportuniteis were ok but not great. a lot of them were at the beginning and not many interns went. maybe they could have had more social opportunites at the end when everyone was more relaxed. we had a social sec who was incharge of organising fun thigns for interns and he was good but no one was very keen/
Yes i would recomment this to a friend or family member. if they wanted to gain an insight into working life and retail, then tesco is the place to go. This 10 weeks showed me what the work place is like and helped boost my confidence. I think it is good to have solid things on your CV and that it what it gave me.
