    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship with Cancer Research UK. I finished my final exams then started a week later. I was part of the HVSP, Special Events Team - working on real life project. This internship has been an invaluable experience, which I would thoroughly recommend.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt extremely valued by my colleagues, I have now got a job in my team! My Manager was extremely supportive and really helped me to get a position in my team. The team were really friendly and welcoming. Some of them had been interns themselves! It's really important to establish a good relationship with your team, I would recommend going on the team lunches etc.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had good support and guidance from my Manager. My tasks were clearly defined and achievable - I managed to exceed these targets and secure more gifts for the ball than expected.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was extremely busy on a daily basis. Alongside my main project, I had an active role on The Intern Fundraising Committee (which I would thoroughly recommend being a part of- a great chance to meet the other Interns and looks good on your CV) My tasks were realistic and achievable.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a huge level of responsibility from day one, I had to contact some of our most valued supporters with a post event banking process. This internship is not about filing or photocopying- you really are getting a fantastic insight into the real working life in the charity sector. I cannot recommend this internship enough! I wish I had done one earlier at university. It does not matter what stage you are at university- whether you're first year or last year, everyone suits.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I have already finished my degree, this internship has helped me to get a full time position in my team. The skills you learn are invaluable and are skills for life, these will help you with any job you go into in the future - no matter what industry. I enhanced my time management, communication skills, CRM management, Internal Stakeholder relationships, organisation, Excel, and presentation skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I was part of a really good team at Cancer Research UK. The whole organisation has a fantastic culture and ethos. I would thoroughly recommend interning in the HVSP team- they are all so friendly and welcoming. The job is really exciting and the teams regularly go for lunches together.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • This internship was really well organised and set up. As Cancer Research UK has interns every 3 months, it's a really smooth process. Everything you need is here. Your team will provide you with everything you need.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I went to some of the workshops which were put on for Interns - Interview Skills, LinkedIn workshop and CV writing. These were all beneficial which I would recommend. All interns are given a personal development plan, which you work through with your Manager and regularly review. You will gain so many valuable skills - with tangible examples which you can use for your CV and future interviews. If I needed any additional support, I could easily have approached my Manager or my team and they would have happily arranged this for me.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I now have a full time job within the team that I interned with. This internship has been a fantastic experience which I would recommend to everyone looking to go into the charity sector.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a really good social scene within my Intern intake- we went for drinks every Thursday, a leaving meal and a trip to the shard. Angel is a really good place to be. One of our Intern fundraising events was a pub quiz at Radicals, which was really good. I think it's really important to get involved with these extra opportunities (although it is not compulsory!) There were other social events which happened- such as a Wimbledon social. There are extra opportunities to volunteer at some of the events- which also looks really good on your CV and is a chance to meet new people.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cancer Research UK gives Interns £4 lunch a day and £57.20 for travel weekly. Mealdeals are the best lunches as you weren't out of pocket! Angel has lots of lovely restaurants that provides CRUK discounts, and have lunchtime menus which are affordable. Angel is a really good place to be. One tube stop along from Kings Cross too!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Angel has lots of lovely bars and pubs - they get busy on Thursdays

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are always opportunities to volunteer at extra events which CRUK hosts- this looks really good on your CV. You can also shadow other teams on your internship if you wish.
