    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at Amex, they treat you like a real employee and give you actual responsbilities and the work you do does matter. Everyone is friendly and always open to help. Our group of Interns got on great and regularly went out socially.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The work I did, was actual work that had an end result that actually benefitted my business unit. Also Directors and VPs were always happy to take time out to discuss their roles and give you advice.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • support and guidance was always there and all my team were always happy to help me with problems. However, given we are treated as employees not interns a certain degree of independance is needed, such that you dont constantly ask questions.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For the most part I was kept very busy throughout my 10 weeks, as can be expected the last 2 weeks was quiet as my project was complete and I was focusing on my final presentation and ensuring all my tasks were handed over to colleagues/complete

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel as an Internat Amex you are treated lik an actual employee, such that they give you proper responsibilites and give you the freedom to complete work in your own way and you have to manage your own time. You're work was your responsbility to complete, such that if you failed to complete it, it meant greater work for colleagues and put your team behind schedule.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • During the induction we were given thorough training in Excel, i feel this will very much help when it comes to coursework during my final year. Also i feel my time management is much better now, as I have had to ensure I have been in control of my own work at all times and that deadlines were met. I have also gained a lotof technical knowledge surrounding my role but real world experience that i can relate to the theory i learn at university

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere is Amex is brilliant. It is a very socialable and relationship driven environment. Everyone you meet is always more than happy to make time to talk to you and give you advice. Although during busy periods its quiet while people work, everyone makes the most of quiet times and there are regular lunches and after work drinks in order to socialise and get to know your team. Its been a very enjoyable place to work, such that you look forward to going to the office everyday.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The interview and assesment process was very smooth, the campus team were brilliant at keeping you informed throughout and were very quick to respond to any questions. Once at Amex, we had 2 induction days to welcome us in and ensure we had laptops and access to everything. Throughout the internship they arranged many talks with more senior members of the company to give us a better understanding of possible roles we could move into and so they could provide us with career adivce both for Amex and in general. The campus team arranged several outings for us, however there were not as many as we hoped and we had to arrange several amongst ourselves.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We were give training tasks to complete in the first few weeks to ensure we were up to speed on policies and on the values on the company. This allowed me to make the most of my time better, as i fully understood how Amex worked. For personal development they really promote networking, and recommend you contact as many senior colleagues as possible to get a greater understanding of Amex and to allow you to ask any questions you feel will help you during your time.

  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I feel somewhere like Amex would be a great place to work both for the social side but also the flexibility they offer. They are happy to allow you to work from more than one of the offices or even work from home if it suits you. This works really well as the virual access is superb. Also they promote moving role around every 2 years, which will give you the chance to broaden your understanding and experience many business units. There are also many opportunities to live and work around the world and due to the global scale of Amex, this is a highly recommended career path, even if only for the short term.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes all the interns based in London got on really well. We went on a few social events arranged by Amex, but we also arranged many more on our own. This was an oppurtunity to meet and network with fellow interns and also to understand what type of work they were doing for their projects. More importantly it allowed us to make very good friends and get to know each other on a social level, and it was a chance to relax and enjoy ourselves after a busy working week. I think with Amex the work life balance is very important to people and so there is a focus on finising work on time when possible

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I had to move into London in order to be able to commute t both the London and Burgess Hill offices. Living in London is of cours every expensive, but the salary does allow for this and means that despite the costs you are able to live comfortably for the 10 weeks but also enjoy yourselfs after work and on nights out with colleagues and other interns. the canteens in both offices are very reasonable and have plenty of choice. being in London the area is full of places to eat and drink, with varying degrees of price. It is expensive, but if you go to the right places you can have a great time without spending too much

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London has very good nightlife, there are more places to go then you know what to do with. These can range from a nice pub, to cocktail bars to clubs. There is something for everyone. The cost is obviously fairly expensive, but you're in London for 10 weeks and you need to make the most of it. Going for drinks or food with colleagues and interns is a great way to boost your network and these opportunities cannot be missed. So just forget about the cost and enjoy yourself (within reason)

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are not too many opportunities to get involved with outside of work. Certain teams arrange 7 a side football and at some offices there are fitness classes. But usually outside of work tends to be going for a coffee catch up, having team kunches or dinners or going for social drink after work. There are also the oppurtunity to go out and meet clients and contacts have dinner and or drinks with them as well
