The Role
I spent 10 weeks learning a lot about the business, meeting more people than I thought was possible and doing work which genuinely had an impact on the business. Everyone I met was great and the team I was working in genuinely cared about me as a person and about work/life balance which seems to be tough to find at an internship! Great firm, great internship. Only issues were that training wasn't specific enough and potentially there could have been more exposure to other business areas.
The work I did had genuine impacts for people around me and they made sure that I was aware of the impact of what I'd done and what it had changed. Everyone I'd worked with thanked me for what I'd done and I really did feel like a valuable member of the team, this is in contrast to friends at other banks who seemed to be sat around refreshing emails all day.
Manager was fantastic at giving support and feedback as long as I made sure I asked for his time and put the work in front of him. I also had a personal issue during the internship, at which point I was told to go back home and sort it and come back when I was ready. I was really impressed by the support I was given at that point having heard some of the brutal stories of people being worked into the ground as interns.
I was kept busy enough that I had things to do from 8am to between 6 and 8pm. I wasn't staying until 11pm and beyond as some people were and I certainly wasn't twiddling my thumbs all day. A really good balance overall and I know the other interns in my LOB felt the same.
I was, obviously, in very much a support role for the people above me. I was doing the work that they were either too busy to do, or just didn't want to. Despite this, I was given responsibility over certain aspects which were simply checked and okayed once I was done. It was enough to keep me satisfied but not enough that I could bring down the whole company.
For a career in banking, they were great. For a university degree, pretty pointless unless you're doing finance courses. Completely depends on the course and how long term a view you take really, ultimately though, pretty useful for someone who wants to work in finance (as I do).
The Company
People were friendly and personable, but busy so the office wasn't hugely animated or jokey. Everyone knew each other so would come over and chat which was nice. Overall atmosphere was professional, but a fairly relaxed professional. It also tended to get more relaxed and more chatty towards the end of the day when people were getting tired and less people were on calls.
It was well organized, with regular events etc.
Lots of training and teaching sessions developing finance and business specific skills. Not many sessions on softer skills encouraging personal development. Clearly lots of investment in training but I think the firm tended to assume that you had these softer skills and that was why they hred you.

The Culture
Among those in our LOB (8 of us) there were fairly regular meet-ups for drinks, meals, bowling nights etc. which was pretty good. Some of us were also invited to other events by colleagues, for example I played a 5-a-side football game with colleagues. The social aspect could have been better, but it was pretty good.
I stayed with family so I'm not really sure on the accommodation aspect, food was fairly expensive but that was expected, drinks were also more expensive that I'm used to but again, this was to be expected in London. The pay was generous so the relatively high cost was definitely offset by this.
Good for drinks, didn't get chance to experience proper nights out, but I imagine you would probably want to venture out of Canary Wharf for a decent night club.
There were a few community activities that were offered as part of the internship, these were good fun. There were also opportunities to get involved with sports with colleagues and also many events through certain groups within the firm, although I didn't join these as they tended to be specific to certain groups, none of which really applied to me.
