The Role
I really enjoyed the internship. I felt like I was contributing to the team, that I could comfortably ask for guidance and I learnt so much about law, with the research element, and more about business services, from the training we had and from the group project set.
I definitely felt like I added to the team, and was aided by the team I worked with. I was given enough responsibility to feel like I was a valued team member.
I was given enough guidance to help me with the work. I preferred it towards the end where I was trusted to independently work out how to research a particular area of law or document as, often with research, a lot of what you learn comes from experience.
On the whole, it was a steady amount of work which I could handle. However, I could have a lot of tasks one day and then very little the next. A testament to my manager, I was often handed projects that filled in this time. Towards the end, the work did start slow down; I think this was due to the time of year I was working in. I remember being warned of this!
I was given a good amount of responsibility, enough at the beginning that it was not daunting at first. As I eased into my role, I felt like I was trusted more to respond to research enquiries and other such tasks. Only thing I would have liked is to attend more meetings so I could feed back to the team personally.
It was definitely a invaluable internship. It, in the short term, taught me a lot about legal research skills and commercial awareness; both which will heavily assist me in my degree studies. More generally, it taught me more about business development in the legal sector and the soft skills required when working in a city environment (the importance of deadlines and time management, maintaining a professional manner, presentation skills etc.).
The Company
It was generally good and people were genuine and friendly. In particular, the business support/development staff were really supportive.
It was well organised, from the socials to the training. Within my research area, I was given a checklist to make sure I was experiencing all areas of the department which helped with my development during the placement.
They invested a good amount of time with me , especially as I was only there for a month. We had presentation skill workshops, commercial awareness talks, and were given the opportunity to develop our group work by accommodating time for a group project that we presented to the all business development teams. It definitely felt like they wanted me to get as much out of this experience as possible, which I did.
Company Parties/Events
It definitely helps to have worked with them previously. It gives you a great insight into the firm as well, so if you are planning to apply in the future, you know what the firm is looking for.
