The Role
The work was a challenge throughout the year, however, the nature of the work was always enjoyable and interesting.
I was made to feel very welcome early on, and this only grew throughout the year. I had a great relationship with both of my bosses (changed half way through the year). A great, friendly relationship with the graphics and web departments, whom I worked with on a day-to-day basis too.
I learned a lot in my time at FLY53 - more than I had anticipated I could in the role of Marketing Assistant. All departments were incredibly supportive in explaining processes and reasoning behind decisions.
As with all jobs, there were days that were quieter and busier than others. There were a few late nights and crazy days, but none more than expected for any marketing role.
My responsibility level varied throughout my year, I started out slowly, then built up into being a key member of my team. The largest point of responsibility was looking after the marketing department in the time between new marketing managers, after this was completed my responsibility moved back down to a more manageable level.
Whilst sometimes I felt slightly out of my depth with certain things, the challenge of overcoming them has helped me learn skills which will undoubtedly put me above other marketing graduates after I complete my degree.
The Company
Whilst the noise level was pretty low most of the time, everyone was a joker, a day didn't go by without a few laughs.
There was no placement position before I started with the company, so the year was a little trial & error for both myself and the company. However, after having an appraisal with both bosses, we outlined what I wanted to achieve before the end of my year, and I managed to complete all targets. I think given a second year, this placement will be organised slightly better, and both parties will benefit massively from a slightly better structure.
The period in which I was alone in the department, I don't feel I had too much support from above, but surrounding departments were extremely helpful and supportive. This really helped me through that challenging time. However, the training and development when under supervision was excellent. There was never a time I felt I couldn't ask a question either, this is something that I felt was a really strong point throughout the whole company, everyone had 5 minutes to run you through something if you didn't quite understand and I've benefitted massively from it.
Company Parties/Events
Staff Sales/Staff Shop
It's a hard place to leave once you've been there a while, you tend to settle in very quickly. The only reason I would hesitate to come back is location. To further my career I feel a bigger city such as London, Birmingham or Manchester would be where I need to be. This isn't a slur against the company, it's more a personal choice.
The Culture
I was the only placement student so not there. The social scene would've been better had I been closer to work - my commute was an hour so staying after work for a drink was always difficult, however when we had work parties it was always a very enjoyable time.
Not too bad, standard town prices.
Worcester is a student city, so that dominates the city nightlife.
Not throughout my year...
