The Role
I really enjoyed my time at American Express and there was never a dull moment.
I felt very welcomed and encouraged; I wasn't given work for the sake of it, I had real tasks and responsibilities.
My manager was fantastic and put in a lot of time with me initially for my training and maintained this throughout the full duration of the internship, always offering more time if I needed. Other senior staff in the team were similarly generous with their time and input.
It was quite a cyclical department in terms of workload, so it got very busy 5-10 days of the month and fairly relaxed for the remainder. I would say it was an average workload, with opportunity to create more work for yourself and use initiative.
I was given a very wide-scoping project that no one had previously looked into, and also tasked with reporting financial analysis twice a month to the executive office in NYC.
I learned many professional skills i.e. networking, professional manner etc. And also technical skills with Excel and TM1. My analytical skills greatly improved and I really gained insight into how to read data and highlight the key variances and drivers on a large, global scale.
The Company
Very friendly and relaxed, everyone was really approachable but still efficient when it came to meeting deadlines. I was in a big team but everyone seemed to mix and get on well.
All the events were arranged with plenty of notice and never needed time alterations or postponing. The onboarding process and training was also very efficient and the general direction given to me as an intern was clear.
Heavily - I did not feel like an intern, I felt like a permanent employee that American Express were investing in for a long time.
Flexi Time
Subsidised Canteen
Sports and Social Club
Company Parties/Events
Working from home
Highly appealing, it is a great company to work for and all the employees say so.
The Culture
There were quite a few events at the start of the internship and at the end, the rest we needed to arrange ourselves.
Expensive, being an exclusive area of central London.
Abundant, busy and varied, so much choice and very safe overall.
Yes, a few sports clubs as well as one Finance Team Sports Day in Hyde Park.
