    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The Internship was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. From the moment I first started the internship, till now, I have learnt a huge amount which I can carry on forward into my future careers whether it be with American Express or elsewhere. The people at the company are great, from the moment you start they are extremely supportive and more then willing to help you out.

    5/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues due to be given work that really had some value within it. I would be regularly participating in business as usual work and feel a sense of both achievement and valued when I got good feedback from work which helped my team out.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support during my internship was faultless, everybody within my team as well as managers and analyst from teams across finance were more then helpful whenever I needed them. The people here are always willing to help you and will make time for you whenever they can.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy and never had a boring day. I was participating in work which really had some value to help the team, meaning I was always busy but not with just any old work, but with work that genuinely mattered.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I had lots of responsibilities during my 10 weeks at American express, this included regularly participating in meetings and work which any other person in the team would usually set out to do. I was in change with the whole of Net discount revenue, a huge line of the P+L, and regularly got in contact with regional LFO teams to explain key stories to them.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I learnt during my internship are priceless, I can carry these on forward into my future career and will help me in years to come, not only in the business world but also at university.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everybody in the office is always friendly, with a generally happy attitude. With such an array of different teams across the office, you may think you cant make small talk with anybody. However, it is the total opposite, everyone is really open and more then willing to chat about what they do in their teams and there main responsibilities, it really puts you at ease!

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Very well Organised, never had any problems with anything that the Human resources team organised as well as my team. Any trips to other offices or any general meetings for interns were always on time and everything was very informative. It made my life a lot easier and meant that I didn't have any extra worries on my mind.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • At American Express they invest a lot of time and money in your personal development, this is because they believe in training there colleagues up with the vision of them being directors and VP's at some point. This meant I was offered a lot of training and extra insights across my 10 week internship and gave me a broad range of knowledge about the company and credit card finance.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I haven't yet been offered a job as this occurs on the last day of my internship, however, I believe there is lots of appeal in getting a job with American express due to having such a wide range of finance teams in totally different areas of finance. This means some teams can be looking at corporate payments between large businesses and others can be looking at certain markets such as the UK.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene was great, and this is credit to the company having such a good work / life balance, as well as having genuine colleagues. There were many social events ran by the campus human resources teams which were always great fun, as well as our own social events between interns. Our final evening out was a boat party down the river Thames which was pretty cool!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Socialising was really good however you are in central London, so things can be pricey.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Nightlife was great, your in central London so of course there is bars and clubs everywhere. Not only that but your a 10min tube journey from places such as Shoreditch, Waterloo, Soho, wherever you want to go out!

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We had a number of activities such as a community day which meant we went to an outside charity area and helped build / manage their activity areas. This entailed chopping trees down, fixing a go kart track and offering our assistance on anything which may help enhance the charities experience for the children that attend.
