    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I spent my 1 year placement working within one of the IT streams within GSK. The division is focusing on rolling out an ERP system across all of the sites and markets. I enjoyed learning about the ERP system and what processes we go through to achieve the desired goal. Coming from a technical background, the work that I was doing wasn't as challenging as I had initially imagined. The work started to get very repetitive after a while but I got myself involved in different areas of the business which helped me to network and work with different people and also learn new skills.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued to an extent. Placement students are hired as Contract Workers by a company called SRG, not actual GSK employees which already provides a gap in feeling like an actual colleague as I felt that contract workers were treated completely differently to permanent workers. My experience with SRG has been one of the worst. I felt valued by my manager and some of my other colleagues.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of support by my colleagues and loyal managers. I received a lot of support at the beginning of my placement, it was very different to others. My managers nurtured me and helped me so over time I was quite able to do things myself and liaise with different people without the need to ask for help from my manager.

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was quite busy at the start of my placement, but as time went on, I started to get pretty bored as the work I was doing was quite repetitive and I had found quicker ways of getting the work done. I then started to express my hunger to learn about different areas of the division, and this helped me to get involved in projects in different areas.

    2/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I wasn't given much responsibility; I reached out to different people to get involved in projects.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I do believe that I have acquired different skills that have helped me become a better professional. Although the placement wasn't very technical, I still learned to be proficient in Microsoft Excel which is very useful. My personal development has grown drastically since my time at GSK.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was quite hectic all year round. There was a lot of shouting and swearing at occasions as tempers can rise.

    1/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think it was quite organised, but there could have been improvements.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company does invest in talented individuals, I gained 2 professional qualifications whilst working for GSK, but this isn't guaranteed, it's solely dependent on whether the department has a budget.

    2/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised/Company Gym

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I wouldn't like to come back in my hinest opinion.

    1/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There's quite a good community of students within GSK House which helps with social events.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Very expensive, the pay just about covers rent for the majority of people.

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • No nighlife in Brentford, normally travel into central London.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Lots of volunteering events to get involved in.
