    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed my internship to some extent. Most importantly, I felt that it gave me a good experience of working life and the corporate world. As an intern, I had the opportunity to shadow many different departments and network with senior colleagues, which meant I developed a good understanding of the services provided and could start to think about whether a career was right for me. However, I felt there were large discrepancies between the experiences interns had, depending on their managers and departments.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I thought that there is a great culture within the company. Colleagues both within and outside of my department were willing to give up their time for me to shadow them and ask them questions. I feel this collaborative culture is encouraged, and is prevalent at all levels of the organisation. I was also given a few tasks to help with on a daily basis and given mini projects to work on, which made me feel a valued member of my team. Finally, I was included in all departmental social events, and felt generally valued in the office.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Throughout the internship, I was given several points of contact that I could go to for support. I was given a buddy, someone currently on the graduate scheme, who I could turn to for informal advice and support. The graduate recruiters were very supportive, with weekly drop in sessions, and gave great advice on how to make the most of our time on the internship. We were also given an Executive Representative, a senior level colleague who ran meetings for the interns and was available to give advice.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I had two business as usually tasks that I had to complete at certain times everyday. Apart from that, my time was my own to fill and divide between the projects I was set. I had the entire internship to prepare my final presentation that all interns had to present to their manager in week 9, so I spent a few hours each week working on that. The rest of my time was filled with shadowing other departments and getting overviews with other interns, listening to senior speaker series on the internet and attending other intern networking events. Although I had things to do to fill my time, I feel that it was not a true reflection of the work load I would have were I to pursue a graduate position. To further fill my time, it was necessary for me to look outside of my department in order to find more jobs.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I feel that I was not given that much responsibility during my internship, however this is understandable to some extent. I was given two business as usual tasks that I had to complete at certain times of the day. Whilst learning these processes, I was able to help edit training guides and SOPs, and was tasked with training another team member to do these jobs also. I was asked to put together a user guide from scratch and give team demonstrations for a new release of a platform, and was tasked with opening mail as part of a larger project. Finally, as part of my larger project, I was tasked with advising on a team reshuffle, by sitting with different team members. I was able to reach out to people outside of my department to gain further jobs.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • As someone doing what I deemed was an unrelated degree (not financial/ economics) I initially thought that my time on the internship would not benefit my degree studies. However, I had the opportunity to present to senior business people, which gave me confidence in myself and enhanced my presenting skills. I had to drastically increase my excel skills, which will help me in future employment. Whilst on the internship I had access to a huge database of online training, which has given me insider knowledge that may help me in career choices in the future. Furthermore, the internship has allowed me to experience the business world, and has given me the confidence that I have the ability to work in a first class company. Overall, my internship has shown me that I should explore other career paths too, and has steered my degree and career path in a different direction.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My office had a very good atmosphere, which has trickled down from the overall culture that is encouraged in the company. Everybody was always happy to help and were very welcoming. Everybody was up for a laugh and a joke; we had a quiz every Friday and photo competitions, and everybody seemed to get along and enjoy their work. However, having interned in a busy and sometimes stressful department, it was obvious that when it came down to it, team members took their work very seriously and did long hours if necessary.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I feel that the internship was fairly well organised. The graduate recruitment team organised a lot of extra networking events and socials for the interns, as well as online resources. They were also very good at relaying, via email, information relating to the internship prior to our start date, which put us at ease.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were two huge online databases full of free resources that we were able to access throughout the course of the internship. For the first three days of the internship, we were not on site, and instead received three days of intensive training on things such as presentation skills and an introduction to financial markets.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • In general, the internship has shown me that there is a great culture within the company and that they seem to look after their staff well. Therefore, to many, this would be a very appealing place to start a graduate scheme. Although I enjoyed my time on the internship, I feel that a place on the graduate scheme is not for me.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene amongst both interns and colleges. The graduate recruitment team put on several socials, including a mid internship and end of internship social that were a fun way to socialise with fellow interns. Whilst there, I got to take part in their summer of sports, which saw intern and staff teams go against each other in netball, rugby, volleyball and rounders. This was a good way to get to know different members of staff.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living in Bournemouth is very good value for money compared to living near the primary site in London. Many interns stayed in local student halls, and were able to walk or use local transport to get to and from work. If interns had a car, there was third party parking that could be used, although this had to be paid for. As for socialising, again it was much cheaper than socialising in London.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The Bournemouth area is definitely a lot quitter and smaller compared to London, and it may come as a bit of a shock to those used to city life. However, there is a good night life in Bournemouth town centre and other local areas, with a variety of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants, and there are many venues located right on the waters edge overlooking the beach.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are endless opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work, and this is strongly encouraged. Whilst on the internship, I was involved in the summer of sport programme, volunteered at the Bring Your Kids to Work day in which I helped to organise and run activities, and worked outside at an RSPB Corporate Responsibility day. There were always opportunities to volunteer for or take part in different events, from sport to volunteering to paint a fence.
