    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my time at Amex! The people are all so friendly, I never felt like I couldn't ask someone if I didn't understand something which happened fairly often as I had never experienced anything similar before. The work was so fun and exciting and my project in particular meant that my time here was always varied and interesting. Loved it!

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Extremely! Nothing was ever an issue or too much to ask! Often was invited out for drinks/to events with my colleagues and discussed many social topics and interacted outside of the work place too. The work I was producing too was extremely valued - coming in to this I thought the work I would be doing would be fairly low key and not too important as I was only an intern but it was the complete opposite. I was able to see how the work I was doing was influencing big projects in the company and I really felt like an integral member of the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Everyone was always super supportive. At the start, there were lots of new things I had to learn quickly and I wouldn't have been as quick without the help of my team. Everyone was always happy to help and they were always aware about giving me too much/little to do and were very attentive with this, by frequently asking me if I was comfortable with my workload and to just flag it up to them if I was struggling.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • The work was always varied (which I loved) and there was always something to do. There were of course quieter days than others but this can also be resolved by being proactive and asking to meet with other people in a different area of the company. People would always be happy to sit down and tell you about what they do and be interested in hearing about what you do and your journey prior to Amex too. Most importantly though I was never bored nor overwhelmed!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given lots of responsibilities which made me feel so valued in the team and trusted! Of course I always had support from other team members throughout to ensure that I was coping okay which was brilliant.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I developed so many valuable skills which I can take back with me to university as well as my future career. Business-like as well as communicative skills were developed, but I also noticed the extra skills I already held from studying my degree which were utilized in my daily routine at the company. Attention to detail and excellent organisational skills really helped me execute my approach to my role and I noticed how I was able to bring a fresh perspective to the table.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • My team was fantastic - always friendly, always a "good morning!" from each team member everyday, as well as taking a genuine interest in you as a person outside of the workplace i.e. asking about what you did on the weekend/evenings and learning about each others lives. Everyone is very enthusiastic about what they do which made each day even more enjoyable. I had so much fun in my team as well as in my interactions with others.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship programme at Amex was like no other I have ever heard of. There were many social events which were more than just heading to the pub every week but consisted of fun and diverse events such as the London Eye, a community day and even a boat trip! As well as this though, many overviews of different areas of the company were set up too which I was able to take part in to get insight into other roles which might have interested me. It was very well-organised and I feel very lucky to have been on such an engaging internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company really invested in me and wanted me to personally develop. I was given responsibilities outside of my comfort zone (provided I had said I was comfortable with it) and so I really broadened my skill set as a result of this. I noticed my extensive development by the end of the internship most definitely.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am yet to find out the result of my internship but I hope I will be lucky enough to come back. Regardless though, the experience has been thoroughly enjoyable and it has been a great opportunity which I can go on to use to my advantage in the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social side was constant fun. Mixing in with the other interns meant that we arranged a lot of socials together such as club nights and after work drinks as well as other fun activities. Parties and events were also organised by colleagues which I was invited to join too. There was always something fun and exciting to do if I wished.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I was based in London, it was understandably more expensive than I had exposure to when I was a student but I lived at home during my internship so this cost did not effect me. Overall however the pricing wasn't horrendous.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Being based in London meant there was obviously a lot of fun nightlife at our disposal which was great. However, it all came down to the company as everyone I worked with, whether that was colleagues or fellow interns, were always fun to be with no matter where we were.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • So many opportunities - events, after work drinks, activities between interns/meet ups etc. For a two week period I didn't go straight home after work once because I had something on every night. It was fantastic as although I was giving up my summer in return for the internship, I still had one of the best summers I've had through meeting so many different people and socializing.
