The Role
Amex was an extremely enjoyable experience - intern events such as the London eye, thames boat cruise and a community day really made the internship an enjoyable one. The recruitment team really went out of their way to ensure we had a great experience and provided lots of food and drinks at all events!
My Colleagues made me feel very welcome indeed and let it be known how important the work I was doing was for the company and how it was valued and appreciated by them. I was given a lot of autonomy and my project was highlighted as a real priority for my division. I also had the chance to present it to my colleagues which was a great opportunity.
Probably the one thing that could have improved my internship - I was not busy enough. Of the ten weeks in total, probably only around six to seven weeks were actually busy. I could easily of had more work and responsibility during my time which was the only let down. However I did have lots of other opportunities to find out more about Amex which made up for this.
In regards to my projects, I was given full responsibility. This was a great part of the internship as I was able to make my mark and take the project on how I wanted to. Despite the work not being the most interesting, I could at least have the responsibility myself of undertaking all the necessary and relevant work attached to the project.
I gained a lot of notable skills during my time at American express. Powerpoint and Excel training were provided and I utilised this during my project work. I was involved with producing powerpoint decks and also creating a large Excel spreadsheet - skills which will stay with me. I also developed presentation and workplace skills.
The Company
Unbeatable atmosphere - the employees are all incredibly friendly and welcoming. I was taken back by just how approachable and kind everyone in the workplace was. I was instantly made to feel at home and part of the team when joining. Everyone will always take time out to help you or tell you about their job. You can't better this.
The internship programme was very well organised - the campus recruitment team are very efficient and on top of their jobs. They pay a lot of attention to detail and are always there to provide help and support. Particularly good at organising events too - all of which were extremely fun and enjoyable (thank you!). - what let it down was the work I was set in terms of not having enough across the 10 weeks.
In terms of personal training and development - some was provided but this could be improved. We received some initial training when joining Amex - presentation skills and how to be your best. We also had some online training but this was more Amex-specific. We could have received better overall career training.

In terms of a corporate company - American Express is extremely good, they offer great pay, a great work atmosphere and a ridiculously good work life balance with great work hours and Work from Home / summer days. A clear career progression and opportunity to move around is also there. The only thing against it is that its a big slow-moving financial services company, which sometimes can be an uninspiring or not the most exciting work place.
The Culture
In Victoria, central London, the cost of living and socialising is extremely high. Living anywhere near central sets you back minimum £750 a month so unless you can commute in it is a very expensive option. All the bars / restaurants nearby are accordingly expensive too. Fortunately Amex pays well enough to cover this.
Numerous out of work opportunities on offer - we had a community day organised for the interns which was great fun. Also a trip down to Brighton to see Amex's offices there too as well. Also there were always opportunities to socialise after work with drinks - either with other interns or with your own team.
