    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Very much enjoyed my time at the internship. It was somewhat of a struggle as my first 9-5, and was a bit of a slow starter getting into what I was going to do for the first couple of weeks, but once I got my head into the projects I was assigned, the time absolutely flew by. The grad team that support the internship scheme also organised multiple training/development days which were very enjoyable, and it was great living with a block of 30-40 other interns across the different streams (all provided as part of the placement).

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Everyone was extremely helpful - I was given valuable projects to contribute on, and my work was recieved very enthusiastically by colleagues, who gave excellent comments and constructive criticism on how I could improve further. Much of my work will now be used further to assist ongoing projects at the company. Multiple team lunches were very enjoyable as well!

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support was always available and very helpful by my line manager. Absolutely no complaints, and the rating would be higher but they took a long holiday in the middle of the placement, although to their credit they sat down with me and made sure I had enough on my plate/knew what to do in their absense, and there were other members of the team available to offer guidance

    4/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Generally very good, though occasionally was stuck waiting for a colleague to get back to me on a key aspect of a project etc, and a lot of the work I carried out involved a fair bit of independent research which could grow a little tedious if done for very long periods. So overall was good, though occasionally less busy, and occasionally a bit hectic - the nature of project-based work I suppose.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • A lot of independent work that will be incorporated into documents that are put in front of regulators, presenting reports I wrote to senior committees, as well as improvements on a widely used system means I always felt responsibility to produce high-quality work that's attributed to me.

    5/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The training I recieved wasn't all that useful - presentation training and group excercises, while fun, were a bit generic and not that useful. On the other hand, the technical skills I picked up on the job were invaluable - I learnt a lot of excel, statistics and a bit of programming as well. Most of this was done by learning while doing in order to complete projects, though help from colleagues was always excellent and on hand when I needed it.

    4/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Quite laid back - smart clothes but no ties, and there wasn't a strict rota of clocking in etc. - you could work a little shorter one day and work a little longer another day, come in a bit earlier to leave a bit earlier etc - the responsibility was on you, as long as you got your work done! A few enjoyable team lunches and friendly colleagues and managers also made the atmosphere relaxed and friendly.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Like clockwork! Coach always organised to multiple developement days, accomodation provided, everything running as planned. Dedicated grad team that organised it and were always on hand to answer questions, with such things as a 'buddy' system with a graduate placement student to help you out. I had a small niggle with IT, but that's more a general business thing than a criticism of the internship set up.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Like I said earlier, there were multiple development and training days scheduled, and they were definitely enjoyable, so there was clear investment going on, however the usfeulness of the training itself was somewhat questionable.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • 5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Currently looking to progress on to the grad scheme for my chosen stream, so that should tell you all there is to know!

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The company hired a block of accomodation at a local university for all 40ish of us - along with multiple days out etc. meant it was very good!

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Living was free thanks to the accomodation provided! It was pretty close to London so nights out were not the cheapest, however multiple convenient supermarkets meant food etc. was reasonable.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Couple of clubs etc. nearby. It's worth mentioning at this point that not all the interns on the scheme were in the London area - a few were employed at other Centrica sites around the country

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Lots of volunteering/charity work was actively encouraged by the grad team.

    4/5
