    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work I was assigned was challenging, interesting and also fulfilling. My manager was spectacular and had an enormous positive impact on my experience. The Human Resources department were happy to provide all the support I needed and the other intern I worked with was really good.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Not only my manager, but the whole team I was placed in were friendly, supportive and nice. I had a lot of laughs over my placement, but I was also recognized and commended for my successes and modestly chastised for my failures. Both of these things were really important to my user experience as it helped keep me motivated and careful to produce the best quality work I could.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager and the Human Resources department could not have been more supportive. I was looked after and watched over to ensure that if there were any issues they could be brought up and taken care of immediately.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was never without work, but also never felt any uncomfortable pressure to stay late or speed up. My team were comfortable with my pace, as was I, there were also plenty of events for me to take part in outside of work including volunteering, networking and webcasts from senior staff members.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given as much autonomy and responsibility as I wanted, which was perfect for me, as it allowed me to ensure I was on the right track, but also pursue my own solutions to the problems I was working on. I was not the only person working on my project, which allowed for a great deal of collaboration which I personally enjoyed a great deal.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned loads of new programming frameworks and techniques, looking at how to weave technologies together to produce an application and the challenges and tribulations faced by software with a large userbase.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was really pleasant and supportive as I mentioned earlier. I was placed with a very friendly and outgoing team who were happy to have me on board and valued my contributions. We had a lot of laughs as well as getting the work done, it was a great balance of social and academic communication.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • On day one all of the hardware and software I'd need to use over the course of my internship was available and ready to go. I spent the first few weeks learning new technologies and then the next weeks putting every last bit of it into practice. I worked on a variety of different aspects of the application I was helping to build, gaining experience in a myriad of fields and picking up a lot of new knowledge and understanding along the way. I was also provided with useful feedback at regular intervals allowing me to stay on track, replicate my successes and amend my mistakes.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was provided with anything and everything I could have needed, from support in regards to networking events and community volunteering opportunities to the more technical stuff. Both Human Resources and my manager scheduled weekly one to one meetings with me. I was also put in touch with mid-level employees in a variety of lines of business for meetings to discuss their work and the impacts that has on the wider bank.

    5/5

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • It was made clear to me by my manager and human resources that I am up for a position on their graduate scheme which I am super excited to accept. I can't wait to get back to the work after I finnish up my degree, It'll be a great experience for me

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The other interns were friendly and outgoing, Human resources organised networking events for us, but by the end of the induction we'd set up a chat group and started organizing our own events at the beaches in Bournemouth or the parks. It was great fun and very effectively complemented the internship experience

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived at home with my family rent free and had a good spread of opportunities to spend time with my fellow interns and the members of my team.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I can't really comment on this as the nightlife of my work area doesn't really interest me at all.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • As I stated before there were plenty of networking and social events put on by HR as well as loads of opportunities for us to volunteer on Bournemouth community projects. I attended a fair for the local farming groups as well as stewarding at an annual jazz festival. both were great and rewarding experiences which allowed me to give back to the community, but that was barely scratching the surface of what's on offer.
