    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the summer internship within operations at J.P Morgan to a great extent. Being able to join a company as an intern and being made to feel like you fit in well within the company is a great experience, moreover the internship provides a great basis to meet new people those already working here and other interns. The internship is filled with various events for networking giving you a fantastic opportunity to meet people working in all different areas across the firm in all different positions of their careers, which provides good guidance for the steps you wish to take in your career and how it is possible to get there. Overall the internship is greatly enjoyable working in a good environment surrounded by people who want to see your career flourish at J.P Morgan.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Specifically within the team I was assigned to work in, from the first day I felt valued. People take time out of their busy days to give you overviews to help train you and give you any help you need with your work. You are never left or thrown into the deep end, someone is always there to help and guide you until the point you are confident in the work you are executing. Furthermore by the end of the internship you really feel like a part of the team not like an intern at all, being given more and more responsibility the more you show that you can achieve.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • From the first day of your internship right through to the last you are supported through your internship, whether it be through weekly meetings with your manager to go through all the work you have done or being given work to do, you are never left in the lurch. As at the time everything is new to you, the management or supervisors understand this and will give you all the training and help you need to succeed in your internship.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Being an intern only here for 10 weeks with no previous training, to begin with many tasks given are project based, so you do what you can within the day to get these done. In the mean time you will be training to be able to complete day to day work to help your team out. However some days will be busier than others depending on how busy your team are and whether you are trained enough to complete certain tasks, as 10 weeks isn't a long time to be able to complete work that people take a few months to perfect. However you are never over worked, your team and management know what you can achieve and will push you accordingly to be the best within the 10 week period and actually come out feeling like you have learnt a great deal in that time.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Being on an internship for only 10 weeks is understandably difficult to give someone too much responsibility, as training and experience is required to execute many tasks. However as the weeks progress you notice you are being given more and more tasks and responsibility with them, tasks that you can see are having a good impact on the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This internship has greatly helped me develop many technology based skills. But more than that it gives you an experience you can use for ever, being able to use your degree in the work place and use the skills you already have and improve them. Not only do you improve your knowledge of the department you work in, you gain insight in to various branches of the firm both hands on and through general learning. The internship allows your communication skills to improve hugely, as day to day you are using these skills in the correct way to different people and environments something which can be used beyond a degree but also within your final year.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone is friendly and welcoming, overall there is a good atmosphere in which colleagues make good attempts to get to know you, invite you to various events and include you in anything that is going on.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is very well organised, before you start you have heaps of information to help you prepare, you are given training before you start and a chance to interact with other interns. You are given everything you need to start. During the internship the recruitment team who have been helping you for the past year set up various opportunities to meet them to go over anything, they set up various events to get all the interns together to create better relationships within that group, and also they give you many opportunities to network with senior people within the firm. Moreover the management are prepared well for your internship, setting you projects to get started on and giving you training and any support you need throughout. So not only do you have the set up of the recruitment team to guide you, you also have a great management set up.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Throughout the internship it is clear the firm have invested a lot of time and effort into making the 10 week experience as good as it can possibly be, from people taking time out to network with you, to days out to meet other senior members or interns. Or even the resources you have available show how the company have invested in you. You are never left unsupported or without guidance.

This scheme is a very respected and has good career prospects and progression. Throughout the internship you are evaluated and given vast amounts of information on the scheme and many other opportunities that are available within J.P Morgan, whether it be in a different region, country, line of business. You gain insights in to your future career prospects that you could not receive anywhere else.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a good social scene amongst interns, not only did we have various events put on for us to get to know each other over the ten weeks but also many interns create great friendships here just as you do at university.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Having lived in this area all my life I cannot compare the cost of living to anywhere else, however as far as I am aware everything is reasonable within the Bournemouth area mostly. However there are various places to socialise in Bournemouth ranging from very cheap to expensive dependent on what you wish to do.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Surrounding the Bournemouth area there are vast amounts of pubs, clubs and sports bars, but if you fancy something up market their is a Hilton roof top bar or various seafront bars and restaurants.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Whether you want to get involved in volunteering, various social events on the beach or just going into town for an evening out there is plenty of opportunities to get involved and socialise outside of work.
