The Role
I found my internship mostly enjoyable. I found that when I was given tasks to complete the internship was rewarding. I also found the diveristy of the organised events that we had was a particular benefit. However, at times I felt as though we could have been given more to do.
I felt that the BWS team valued me a lot. They showed me respect and treated me as one of them rather than an intern. Whilst this is predominantely a positive thing, it did mean that sometimes I was left pondering.
My line manager was supportive and always asked how I was doing, equally my trading manager was very active in ensuring my project was taken seriously. I worked very closely with him and several other managers to get my project off the ground.
This varied quite a lot. One day I could have a complete day full of work whilst the next two could be filled with me having to do work that I could have done in a lot shorter of a period. Having said that, I am aware that as an intern in a company the size of M&S to expect to be the number one priority would be dumbfounded.
I was given quite a bit of responsibility and independence throughout my placement. This has ranged from organising meetings with a wide range of people, from store managers to the M&S in-house lawyers. Moreover, I have been responsible for reviewing the progress of the Wine Shop and seen some of my suggestions put into action.
As a law student this internship has allowed me to develop my ability to communicate with a wide range of people all of whom hold stakes in the same project. Moreover, it has opened my eyes to the actual working environment in a large commercial company. It has allowed me to see how the transferable skills that I have acquired through my law degree and time working in-store can actually be used.
