    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed it a lot because I was challenged and learned new skills that will help me in my final year of university. I was given independence and the freedom to conduct my own research to help the group. I enjoyed the team that I worked in because they were very welcoming and provided a fun and relaxed working environment. This placement will also improve my cv and help me get a great graduate job.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt welcomed and enjoyed the company of my group. I was able to socialise with them outside of working hours and still maintain a great working relationship with them in the office. However, I feel as though my colleagues were hesitant to give me important work that I would find challenging. I could have been trusted to complete more valuable and challenging work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I was given a lot of guidance and support throughout my placement. I had weekly meetings with my placement supervisor and weekly team meetings with my manager. I was able to go to them with any issues/concerns that I had. They were up to date with all the work that I was doing and the work that I planned to progress with. Any issues and concerns that I raised, were solved. They made sure that I knew how to do the work that was assigned to me by teaching me the methods and procedures needed to approach a task accordingly.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • How busy I was depended on the work that was assigned to the department. There were times where I was working on multiple projects at a time, however there were times where I was not busy at all. The months toward the end of my placement were not busy at all. I found myself asking for work to be allocated to me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was responsible for the research that I conducted and ensuring that the work allocated to me was delivered on time. I was also responsible for booking relevant meetings and making travel arrangements if necessary. I feel as though I could have been given more responsibility over the course of the year by being allocated more valuable work.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Completing a placement has made me more mature and experiencing a professional working environment has prepared me for my graduate career. I have also become more disciplined by ensuring that I am always organised and committed to the work that I am doing. I will also be able to approach my degree projects from different perspectives by using the skills and experience gained from my placement.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Within my department, it was very relaxed and fun as we were able to have casual conversations without creating a disruptive working environment. On the floor plate, the atmosphere is also relaxed. I did not feel uncomfortable or bored by the atmosphere within the office at any point. I also liked the fact that I was able to go for coffee/tea breaks during the day.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I think that it was fairly organised. The plan for the placement was fantastic and I was integrated very well into the company through the formal development scheme. However, I feel as though the allocation of work needs to be revised more often by the department to ensure that I would not run out of tasks to complete.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was offered the training and development that was necessary for my role. I also appreciated the fact that the company would encourage development and volunteering opportunities that would benefit undergraduate students. The company is also open to suggestions for training that may be useful for placement students which is also good.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future job prospects are appealing because once you're integrated in the company, you get comfortable with your colleagues and used to working within the company. Also, you're aware of what your job role entails. Not only this but MBDA gives employees the opportunity to move into different departments within the company, so you gain new skills and experiences.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a fantastic social scene amongst placement students. Social activities are organised outside of working hours by the students at least once a month and . Students also tend to house share when accepting a job offer from the company. When joining the company, they fund an interaction week for the graduate, undergraduate and apprentice students where we bonded together. During the interaction week we also learned about the company and key skills needed within the working environment, so many team building exercises and social activities were organised.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The cost of living was above average however the cost of socialising was average. There are two universities within the area so the city is filled with other students and student events. Within the city, there are many festivals and events hosted and advertised in the streets. The city is lively, friendly and safe from my personal experience.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife is great. There are many bars, pubs and clubs within the city centre. The bars are filled with friendly people of all ages. Some bars, pubs and clubs have student nights/events. There are many themes to choose from. Every night there is a place what will have live music, or a show, or an event.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There are many sporting activities and teams that I was able to join (inside of work and outside of work). There are also volunteering groups such as "the charity challenge" (a group that organises fundraisers for charities). MBDA also provide the opportunity for employees to go into schools to teach children how to make gliders for a competition, this is called "the flying start challenge". This is a great opportunity and contributes towards experiences that are needed for chartership.
