    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Everyone does not enjoy experiences from time to time, and when the pressure was on I felt like this. Additionally, I was not comfortable with the competitive 'banter' that was forced upon us. and that everyone could see our progress.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • It depended on who it was in the department, as many collegues did not understand why we were there and that we were aiding them. Additionally some believed we were favoured. However, people who took the time to understand valued our experience.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • We were given a personal supervisor who aided our training everyday and answered all our question. however, other times our other supervisor was unapproachable, which could leave us without help.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • We were given a workload which was the same amount as everyone else, however, sometimes I fel pushed to acheive more in a working day then what was evidently possible and that other full-time members in the team could not acheive.

  • we were given our own tools and claims, therefore were were fully responsible for what happened to them.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Communication, computer and confidence will stay with me for life.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I think if you were freindly to people they were friendly to you, however, this did not extend to lunchtimes or after work. I felt people were cold towards you when they knew they didn't have to be nice. On the other hand, there were aspects when everyone pulled together and it was great. Furthermore, I am happy with the team I was placed in as we had a lot of fun.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The way each internship was structured was different, there was no continuity. As the 'first group' of interns we were not given training before starting the job, and then given training a further 4 weeks after starting, this felt patronising. Also if it wasn't for the support of other collegues, some of the time we would have not have learnt things that were fundamental, things that we needed to be told e.g. timesheets.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • In all honesty, they gave us ample opportunity to shine, and this is what caused friction in the office. we were supported and even given the opportunity to meet and lunch the vice-president of our division, who gave us invaluable advice. this is something I will never forget.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I believe there is many opportunities within this company which make the graduate scheme extremely appealing, whether it is for me is a different question.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We were not encouraged to socuialise with each other, as per the behaviour of other collegues. however, this didn't matter and when given the opportunity we did socialise, but only once outside of work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • i don't live in the area, I commuted. And I cann't say the nightlife appealed to me...

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • We were not encouraged to socialise with each other outside of work, only if the department really encouraged it. And sometimes it was difficult as the atmosphere between full-time and placement students was a s discussed in previous questions.
