    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Fidelity invest a lot into their interns and care about them from the very first day. HR are very approachable and constantly try to receive feedback from the interns in order to improve the internship. Weekly lunch & learns, intern events and a week long training session at the beginning of the internship are just a few ways of showing how we are their investments for the future.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • People make the places and this is certainly very true for Fidelity. All colleagues, no matter if they are in the same division or not, are very approachable and willing to take some time to explain you what they do. When doing so, you get plenty of different insights into various roles, which allows you to better understand how the company works.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Personally, the project I was given was rather independent work. I was not given a lot of guidance. Rather, they wanted my view on things and gave me the freedom to tackle the problems in a way I thought would be best. If I had questions, however, I was always allowed to go to my manager and ask for help.

    3/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There were days where I was a little busier than others. But overall, the workload was just such that I always had something to do. Working hours were very reasonable and there was enough time to meet people from other divisions and get insights into different areas within the Marketing department and Fidelity.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • 4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Especially the first training week was very insightful. It gave you a very good, overall understanding of Capital Markets. Rather than focussing on dry theory only, the material was thought in a very interactive way. In addition, general workforce basics like Excel training were part of the training - something that is very useful no matter what kind of position you're aiming for.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere depends on the location. Whereas Kingswood is more relaxed and laid back (dress code is accordingly business casual), Cannon Street is more vibrant. People are very friendly and happy help or happy to have a quick chat no matter where they are located. Also, overall you feel that Fidelity is privately owned since people are less stressed and under pressure than at other companies.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship is very well organised and structured. It starts with the AC and remains true throughout the whole internship. HR is in constant contact with you and cares about your well-being throughout the internship. They organise weekly Lunch and Learn events with speakers from different sectors across the firm.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The firm invests a lot in their interns. Even though the internship is only 8 weeks long, all of us had one full week of general training and intro sessions into Capital Markets at the beginning of the internship. The training also included Excel as well as Bloomberg sessions. Many of these sessions were outsourced to professionals.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • The fact that Fidelity invests so much in their interns shows that they really want you to stay for a grad scheme. They give you plenty of opportunities to prove yourself, including a final presentation at the end of the internship in front of HR and the Graduate Programme sponsor. You've got it all in your own hands...

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Given that many of us lived together, we got to know each other quite well. Also, there were weekly events where all the interns would meet. Since there is a canteen in Kingswood, we mostly went to lunch all together, which gave us time to exchange and share our experiences.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Most of us received accommodation from Fidelity in the city of London. Hence, we went back to London after work and spent most of our free time in the city. Also, Kingswood has a subsidised canteen, such that the cost for food is very low but the food super delicious - definitely the highlight of Kingswood!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Kingswood is not the place to be for nightlife. However, most of us lived in London and commuted back and forth. While we could enjoy the beautiful and inspirational nature in Kingswood throughout the day, we could spend our evenings and weekends in vibrant London, which is perfect for nightlife.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The Kingswood office has weekly outdoor sports sessions organised which all employees are able to join. Also, we had a full day dedicated to fundraising, where each intern/grad team had to come up with an effective way to raise money (some sold raffle tickets, others sold cakes or washed cars all day long). Also, interns are always included in team events like after-work drinks, lunches at the pub or offsite events.
