    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really loved my placement from the very first day. The office team is great and I started to feel like being in a second family. The task had been more challenging as I expected in the beginning but I learned a lot and I am sure this was one of the most beneficial internships.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Since I reported directly to the marketing manager sharing the desk with me, I became instant feedback on my work and could also see the value of my work for the company

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My supervisor gave me full support. The fact that the team was quite small, all sharing the same office created a very relaxed and comfortable environment. So, whenever I had a question, I could easily reach someone and my colleagues always took time to help me.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was quite busy but very independent with prioritizing and scheduling my work. In addition, my supervisor always asked me about my workload so I was never really overloaded, but also never had nothing to do.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I had quite a lot responsibility. Although I dealt more with tasks having a benefit on the long run, I guess it was quite important and will be beneficial.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Next to learning to work together with international and Chinese colleagues, I also learned a lot about online marketing which is transferable to many businesses and I therefore believe that it is a high value to my career plans.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The office was comparatively small which makes it a nice touch since very soon, I got very close with my colleagues and it felt like a second family away from home. There was always someone there to help me and we also had a great time sharing food or doing some jokes or nice stories while working.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was very well organized. The application process was very quick and efficient and the visa assistance went very smooth and quick as well. I also had a lot of contact with my supervisor before so I knew a lot already when I arrived in China and was well prepared for my first time ever being in Asia.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I learned a lot during this internship. My supervisor gave me training in SEO and I worked on a project to apply the skills I just learned. I also learned several strategies in online marketing like creating linking and working with social media channels and do email marketing campaigns, which was very interesting. Mostly, I had the chance to work on a longer project so I could do some research myself and received feedback on the products I delivered.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There is a very big WeChat group where always plans have been made for the evening and the weekend. I made friends with many colleagues so we also hang out after work or during the weekend like having a dinner together or going for a drink or also doing sports together like swimming.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The area I was working in, the French Concession, is one of the most fancy areas in Shanghai. You can get anything you want there. Around are several cafes, bakery, restaurants with food from all over the world but this has its price. However, there are also some local Chinese places which are more affordable. The area of my apartment was a very nice Chinese neighborhood with lots of local eateries and shops but just 4 metro stops away from work. There, people sold fruits or vegetables on the street so I was able to get a breakfast for around 5 CNY and dinner for 15 CNY which is very cheap compared to Europe.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The French Concession, the area I worked in, has one of the most popular bars and clubs of Shanghai although I did not go out that often. I went with some Chinese people to KTV places (singing) and some bars in there areas. But I know from some colleagues that there are several hot spots close by which they really loved.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes there had been lots of opportunities. Many activities about typical Chinese cultural and traditional things had been organized. I went to activities like how to play the Mah Jong game, cooking classes, sightseeing trips in Shanghai (like a riverboat cruise or museum visits), calligraphy, Chinese painting, stone carving, and much more.
