    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Extremely interesting internship. Everyone is given a project to work on over the 10 weeks and it is something that is actually of use. It is working on real world things. Got to know the other interns well and it was a great group of people. There were always events and socials going on, from bowling to pizza at lunch. There was also a close relationship with lots of the grads and a nice friendly atmosphere in the office. The offices are all new and modern, with kitchens on every floor with free tea and coffee

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Tesco made a huge effort in making us feel valued. We we're constantly asked our opinion and told that our opinion matters. We had talks on how to be assertive and were encouraged not to just sit back and not say anything in meetings. People often asked our opinions as we don't already see everything in the 'Tesco Way'. I was asked to help out on work that my colleagues were doing and joined in everything that my team did. They certainly did not make me feel that because I'm an intern, I have nothing to add.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I could ask my manager as many questions as I wanted, he often sat next to me and could answer anything necessary. I also had regular meeting with my team lead, checking that I was getting on well and seeing if there was anything I was unsure about. Every intern is given a buddy, this is someone on the grad scheme who you'll regularly meet with for coffee and can ask about anything. We also have regular meetings with someone from the people team and with someone from the Early Career's team. I had a program sponsor who was at director level, we had a few meetings with her to find out our opinions of the internship and if there is anything we would like to change

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was not expected to ever stay much past 5pm or arrive earlier than 9. Everything was do able in normal working hours. There were a few days particularly at the beginning of the internship where I had little to do as my manager was away however after asking for more tasks this did not happen again. There were lots of courses and master classes that we could sign up to, so on a day where there was little going on I could attend a master class. These were often extremely useful.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was working on a project, the results of which Tesco will actually use. I could take the project in any direction that I wanted and present it in the way that I thought was best and most useful. I could look into areas that I thought were the most interesting and would be of the most value to Tesco.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • We had development days where we were taught about presentation skills, leadership skills and how to work well in a team. We could also attend master classes on a range of topics from how to have a positive mind to how to be innovative. All of these skills will be useful at university and beyond. There was a big emphasis on personal development rather than just building us into the perfect Tesco employee.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone was extremely friendly and chatty. The offices were all new and modern which encouraged a great atmosphere. People were relaxed and genuinely seemed really happy. Anyone could talk to anyone and the offices are all open plan encouraging this. There were big kitchens on every floor to go to for a break with free tea and coffee. Tesco also organised free food items on certain days such as ice cream or strawberries and cream which created a lovely atmosphere.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was extremely well organised. Everyone had a set project to do for the ten weeks which had been approved by various people. There was a set early careers team in charge of making sure the internship ran smoothly. We had two induction days introducing what were going to be doing for the ten weeks and a timeline of what was happening when. I then had a sign off meeting to show the work I had done.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We had two introduction days and two development days were were learnt a variety of personal skills. These ranged from empathy, teamwork, leadership, innovation, resilience, assertiveness and presentation skills. There were also optional master classes run throughout the 10 weeks. I was encouraged to take as much from the internship as possible and speak to as many different people as I could to find out how businesses work and develop key skills.
