    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • All the people in the office were really nice and made this experience for me. The whole internship has been a great journey from knowing little about how I would fit in to being able to help on many different projects. There were a few times that I was given some mundane tasks, but when this was done, the work was greatly appreciated and more interesting work was given It was great to see all aspects of the work that could be given with no frills attached! The social events as well were really great fun and it seemed like a really natural experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • All the people that I had the pleasure to work with were kind and helpful. Everytime I finished a piece of work, they went through it with me, and thanked me for the work I put in. For all the work that I put in, it did seem as though the work would be used and was helpful for actual business projects and not just completely random tasks given to the intern to keep them occupied! Overall, I felt as though I had a wonderful experience being involved in a team and they all made me feel welcomed and valued throughout the internship.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • This was one of the greatest amount of help/guidance I have ever recieved. For every piece of work given, either my buddy/manager/other colleagues had time to go through and explain the task before I began, which made the task really easy and enjoyable. If there were any concerns, I was able to go and ask for help without hesitation. It never seemed as though I was a burden when asking for help- although I can imagine that it must have been difficult sometimes trying to balance their own work and my queries! To that end, this was one of the reasons that I had a great time, as I never felt scared to ask for help. Furthermore, it was great to have a buddy system and a people manager to track your progress. It was great to turn to someone who was new to the firm and had recently gone through the same questions about adapting to work here, and so allowing them to easily help with your issues. The people manager side of things was great as they made every effort to make sure you got the most out of your internship. Be that making sure that you managed to get experience in different parts of the firm to tracking your progress and making sure you were happy with your experience. Basically, at any level there was help at every level that you needed. A further help net was the student recruitment team that were helpful at every instance and made sure I was prepared and confident enough for the internship. Overall, they definitely were truthful when they said that there is no such thing as a stupid question!

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There was work for most of the time. At the beginning there was not much to get hands on with just because of the lack of skills that you started with. However, there were plenty of eLearns to help understand more about certain parts of the company and to learn new skills. After the initial start I had plenty of work and when I ran out I could easily ask for some. Everyone helped and made sure that I was always busy with some work. The work that was given was always interesting and helpful. It gave a brilliant insight into the different aspects that were undertaken by the team I was in, and even allowed me to understand and see how different companies that PwC worked with functioned. In some ways it was good not to be rushed off me feet 24/7 as it allowed me to relax and take stock of things just learnt ready for the next lot of jobs!

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I don't think this question really plays to the strength of the placement. In terms of trust, I feel as though everyone I worked with trusted me and the work I produced 100%. There were not many times that I was in control of the work that I was doing and I was not ever really responsible for making work or delegating people. However, I was repsonsible for all the work that I produced and people expected it to be done to a high standard. Overall, there was a high level of responsibility that was placed on the work I did but I was never pushed to be responsible to a higher level, but I never felt that there was a need to do this at a starting level in the firm when you are working in a team with a hierarchical structure.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A learnt a lot about how firms/auditors function and I developed my computer skills in relation to spreadsheets and systems tenfold. It was great to see a business from an auditors perspective where you see the whole picture and understand the controls and measures in place to control the overall functioning of an entity. It has been great to learn more about the technology side of businesses and I will take this further in life. I don't feel as though any of the skills that I have gained will be lost on the wayside in the near and distant future. Be that from building professional relationships to gaining more technical capabilities. Even if I don't work for PwC, I feel as though I have gained quite a few transferable skills.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Everyone seemed happy and content with the work they were given. The sociable and happy mode was very productive and a brilliant environment to be working in. The conversation did not have to be work 24/7! It was a nice friendly atmosphere and I never felt awkward being there. You could have a conversation with anyone and they were always happy to chat.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • It was organised very well. I always knew what tasks/jobs I had on the horizon and kept informed on the progress of things. The induction was a great way to begin the experience and was structured in a way that if I ever had any queries, there was always someone on hand. The team structure meant that I always knew who to go to for help and jobs. The recruitment team ensured that I knew what/where I had to be and the requirements from day one.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There is a lot of learning material for those who want it. The induction was really good for setting you up with the basic skills and the team that you work with are brilliant for passing on knowledge and helpful experiences. There was a lot of information given and shared that was beneficial for my development.

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • After my experience with the firm I would definitely consider a job with PwC in the future. The atmosphere was great and the fact that it was full of nice people made it seem less like a job at times which was great. Also the work was interesting and so I would definitely like to keep up with the firm as it progresses into the future.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The interns arranged many social events to catch up with each other which was really nice. Social events set up by the firm were a great way to get to know people outside of the work capacity and know them on a more informal level as well as give honest answers. Overall I think there was a great, harmonious social scene that was nice to be a part of.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • It was fairly reasonably priced and never seemed too taxing. The only times when it got slightly expensive was after social events with PwC, but it was definitely worth the price!

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • As I lived outside of the city that I worked at, I never really got a good glimpse at the nightlife. But from the small bit that I saw it seemed pretty good.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were quite a few sport teams after work that you could join in with. Furthermore, quite a few people seemed to get together for social events that seemed like a good bit of fun.
