    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I very much enjoyed my placement year at HP Inc. Although it had many ups and downs due to the company splitting in November 2015, I have achieved skills and experiences in a wide range of subjects, which I would never have achieved if I simply stayed in University.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued the most by my team, they helped me wherever they could and I never felt of less value compared to them simply because I was an intern. Every member of staff is increasingly welcoming and encouraging to all interns. I've made bonds with staff members that will continue even when I have finished my year.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support from my manager was unfortunately varied, this was due to all of the change I experienced. This however taught me a valuable lesson when working for a blue chip organisation, change is a constant and its how we deal with these changes that marks our careers. I feel although the direct support and guidance has been lacking by my direct manager this has worked in my favour.I have been encouraged to take on new roles and responsibilities on my own accord.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • My days varied as my role was project based, at points I could be working none stop on complex projects and others I would simply deal with Ad Hoc requests. However due to the programs at HP such as their internal University and Job skills programs I was able to develop other skills alongside my job such as motivational speaking and digital marketing and operations. This meant I was usually very busy each day, either working or managing my own learning.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I was given an almost unfathomable amount of responsibility this year, from the start I have managed my own work and top level projects, as well as hosting meeting and attending events with my team. I have not felt like an intern at all, more a valued member of staff.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I can only hope that the varied range of skills I have not only developed but also gained this year will be a credit to me in the future, as I complete University and beyond. They will not only help greatly with university but I feel this year has provided a fantastic insight for after University and wherever my career takes me.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere of the office was fantastic. With an open planned office like the one at HP Bracknell no member of staff was off limits. We were encouraged to speak across departments to get involved in on and off site activities and we received a number of benefits such as a staff canteen and free tea and coffee. It has a real atmosphere of collaboration and almost friendship across all levels. HP prides itself on its open door policy, meaning if there ever was an issue reporting it to the correct department is a must, this is given to new employees in the form of onboarding training from day one until your time at HP ends. Staff are fantastic and no matter the issue are always happy to help. There is a real relaxed atmosphere even considering HP is a corporate company, trust and understanding provided to all from all.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My internship started as a highly organised and exciting role, with ample experiences and responsibilities throughout the year. However this did change after Christmas and I almost had to orgnaise my role myself. This thankfully was not an issue to my overall performance as by that time I felt I had enough confidence and footing within my team to really take my role on myself and to tailor it to what I wanted in an internship.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • HP have definitely made an investment in me as well as all of the other interns they have hosted this year. Even if I do not return to HP in the future I am certain the trainings and development I have received will help me where ever I may work. From onsite employee trainings in a range of subjects cross departments, to their own training and development infrastructure. Everyone at HP is encouraged to develop a highly tuned set of skills related to their job role, and to then investigate and explore other skills and areas to develop.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am unsure whether I will return to HP or apply for a graduate position, not because of the company but because of my job role. It is maybe not what I want to do for a future career, however if other roles or opportunities were to arise I would definitely consider applying. I believe that's one of the beauties of a placement year, you are able to test out a role within a company and make a formative decision on whether it interests you and how you feel working for the company itself. Although I am uncertain of my return I feel this year has been fantastic in my decisions regarding my future career and what department of business I would now like to work within.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene at HP was amazing. With over 80 interns at HP in my year 2015/16 we almost became a second community within the office. We voted for a leadership team, fundraised for charities over a number of events. Organised nights out as well as the HP Summer Ball and the integration of the joining interns in the summer. I don't feel I would have had as good an experience at HP if I hadn't been able to meet so many other interns, we have all made connections and it has given us all a change to meet like minded students from other universities across the country.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As I am from Newcastle the cost of living and socialising in the South of England was always going to be higher than what I had experienced at University and at home. However with such close links to London and reasonable rent on a decent house as well as the intern social scene and being paid on placement, this was never an issue or a problematic experience. If anything it also taught me how to budget correctly when receiving a salary, something I had not done on this scale in the past.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Working in Bracknell but living in the student town of Reading meant I was able to experience the same nightlife scene as any other city or town with a university. It was varied and interesting enough to keep us all satisfied throughout the year, although I would never have considered this an issue to my placement if it had have been lacking.

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, HP prides itself on its charitable contribution and its sustainability as a company. I have been involved in many events outside of work such as a food packing event for the charity Stop Hunger Now and the Palace to Palace bike ride raising money for the Princes Trust. I was also able to attend other corporate events not relating to my job such as the Women in Business seminar in London. Everyone is encouraged to get involved with events inside and outside of the office and I believed this really helped my overall experience at HP.
