The Role
Completing a placement at P&G was a great experience. There was always so much going on within the office which I could get involved in. I was able to own my own processes and make improvements to these which was very rewarding. There were so many projects and teams which I could get involved in and every day was different and I was learning something new. P&G do a lot of charity work so I had opportunities to volunteer and see how the money we had raised was benefiting the charities.
P&G go by the motto that they hire the person and not the position and I think because of that everyone has the same work ethic where everyone respects each other and are always more than happy to help. I felt like one of the team and never felt like I was the odd one out because I was a placement student.
There were so many support networks available, not just your manager and work colleagues. On a monthly basis I had a one-to-one meeting with my manager where I could discuss anything I wanted - for example any questions I had in relation to my work, if I wanted to develop particular skills or if I wanted to get involved in some different work or projects. My manager was very approachable at any time if I required any help or guidance, they always ensured that there was someone there to provide support where necessary. I also had a buddy while I was on placement who I had regular catch ups with to check everything was going well or if I needed some informal advice.
After the first couple of months which involved a lot of training and shadowing, I was pretty busy every day but not to the stage where it was unmanageable at any point - although occasionally it did test my organisation skills! I was in a role where certain tasks had to be complete every morning by a given deadline so the mornings would fly by! I had a nice balance of meetings and time spent at my desk.
After the first few months I felt I was given as much responsibility as most of the other people in my team. I didn't feel like I was given the easy or boring jobs. I was given responsibility to own a number of processes where I had to ensure they were complete on time with quality. I was also involved in a number of projects, which was good to be able to meet and work with people outside of my department, one of which I was responsible for leading for my team. There was so many opportunities to get involved in different teams and projects where I could take on extra responsibility.
Spending a year on placement definitely made me more organised for my final year at uni in terms of planning my time and managing my work load but also team work. I was also able to relate some aspects of working at P&G to my uni work which helped to provide real life context.
The Company
P&G invest a lot of time in training and developing employees. There is always training and 'refresher' sessions and there is a full week each year dedicated to personal development. There are regular sessions which you can sign up to if you want to develop skills in a particular area ranging from Excel training to presentational skills.

The Culture
When I joined there was a lot of other placement students who started at the same time and we went out frequently which was nice for those who were new to the area, I also went on regular nights out with my team. There is also a sports and social club which anyone can get involved in which is a great way to get to know more people.
The nightlife in Newcastle is great - there is something for everyone.
P&G has a sports and social club and there is always something going on - from football and netball to go-karting and theatre. It's a good way to get to know other people
