    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship with Language Connect. My colleagues made sure I felt welcomed and valued from my first day and I was encouraged to join in with many social events alongside work. My tasks were clearly explained to me and guidance given when needed. The whole team worked really well together and I feel I have gained valuable skills and much work experience over the four months.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues made me feel highly valued throughout my internship as I was kept informed of my progress and praised regularly, which made me feel pleased to have done a good job. I felt "part of the team" very quickly as well as connecting with many others in the company in a short space of time due to the friendly atmosphere within the workplace.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Each separate area of my role was shown and explained clearly to me by my manager which put me at ease and ensured I quickly grew in confidence. The members of my team were happy to help with my queries and took extra time to explain any areas in which I had difficulties. I felt the support was exceptional and I really appreciated that the time was taken to fully explain and aid me without being made to feel as if my question was wasting time.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was often very busy during my internship which I found to be challenging at first but enjoyable as I grew into the role - there was never a dull moment! I could see the work I was doing making a difference to the whole team which was a great boost. Occasionally, towards the start of my internship, the workload could seem a little overwhelming but the others on my team were always on hand to help through particularly busy periods.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I felt I was given a great deal of responsibility throughout my internship as I required to fulfill the demands of a specific client on a daily basis. Therefore I was required to manage multiple projects simultaneously and directly liaise with an important client and compete their requests to a satisfactory level, While this could be daunting at times, I appreciated the fact my work was valued and that it truly made a difference to the company as a whole.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Whilst working as an intern, I have improved my time management skills and ability to prioritise urgent work in order to complete tasks in an efficient manner. This will be extremely helpful should I decide to complete a postgraduate degree in the future. I have also developed my communication skills and phone manner which will be highly useful for future studies as well as during job interviews.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I really loved the atmosphere within the office and the company as a whole. The trouble was taken to introduce me to each member of staff on my first day and I felt welcomed by everybody despite people being very busy. Regular social and sports events meant colleagues often met outside a work environment which created strong bonds and gave the company its inclusive, vibrant fee.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The internship was very well organised and I felt all my questions were answered and my tasks as an intern were well explained during the onboarding on my first day. The welcome and explanation of role all put me at ease and I always felt I was well monitored throughout the experience. I was also well briefed before my first day and given clear instructions of what to expect.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The company offered training on technology such as Excel skills and advised us on pensions and how to plan for the future. Training was offered to those interested, which extended to interns meaning new skills can be acquired throughout the placement. Also, there is the opportunity to do a skills swap with another intern on a different team through which you can broaden your knowledge of the company and try out new skills.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Sports and Social Club

    Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very good. Many recent interns before me have been hired and a large number of my colleagues had completed an internship. With a a couple of months left of my internship the possibility of a permanent position for my role was mentioned. Also, at the end of my internship, there was another job opening on a separate team in the company for which other interns where encouraged to apply. As the company is growing it is a great place to take a placement in the hope of gaining a permanent job.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Myself, the other interns and recently hired former interns often organised social events together and went for meals regularly. We were encouraged to help each other out and welcome each new intern to the company in order for them to feel welcome. This socialising means I have made good friends and feel close to my colleagues, which in turn means the company feels dynamic and friendly.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Rent in London is extremely expensive in addition to travel expenses required to travel to work. The office is based near London Bridge and I found the prices for socalising in bars and restaurants to be quite reasonable. Of course, London will always be pricey but I found I never had a problem as I was careful with money throughout my placement.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • When we socialised as an office we tended to go to pubs and bars close to London Bridge where there are some bars with great atmosphere reasonable prices.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Aside from social events for the whole office and gatherings organised by myself and the other interns there are fitness and volunteering activities. For example, many of us represented the company in the 10km sponsored London Legal Walk and weekly yoga classes were organised for staff free of charge. We were regularly encouraged to take part in these activities in order to have fun and get to know your colleagues better.
