The Role
Highly enjoyed working with the company, they provide energising events throughout the year and continued training and development opportunities to make sure everybody gets the most out of the year.
I felt incredibly valued by my colleagues, as straight away I was given project and process ownership work. As long as you continue to show initiative and a willingness to work and learn everyone will be welcoming and feel you will be adding value.
I was given a lot of support by not only my direct management but also the "Rise Up" team that looks after all interns and other new recruits on site. This support gave me opportunities to voice my opinions on the placement and also make sure I continued to prove and show my abilities throughout the year.
I was incredibly busy on a daily basis, which could be classed and good or bad. It meant I was not sitting around board very much and the days seemed to fly by, but it did mean that it became a high pressure and stressful job. This high pressure will come with any finance department within a large company though, so I believe will be part and parcel with any placement role.
I was given a high amount of responsibility straight away, from working on team daily processes to my own process ownership which also allowed me to try and make and point out any improvements that could be useful in providing savings.
The main skills that will support me in my future degree studies are the time keeping and work ethic skills. These have been learnt throughout the year and will help me to continue the high standards into my final year at university. The process, finance and accounting skills learnt seemed to be very individual to the company and will probably not provide a lot of help going back to my university studies but may be helpful in the future when working in the accounting systems.
The Company
The general atmosphere was fun and engaging, with an open plan office space for all employees it made it easy to ask questions and develop knowledge and enjoyment.
The placement was very well organised, with a specific "Rise Up" team looking after all of the students. They provided support and set stages throughout where we were able to present our achievements.
There was many personal training sessions, going from first joining the company with the teams processes to moving through the year with other flow opportunities to other teams and many sessions for developing knowledge about the wider company.

The idea of working within this company is very appealing to me and if, after my year, I then get a job offer for after I finish my degree it will seem like a very safe option and allow me to feel more confident in getting a job offer from such a massive international company.
The Culture
There was an extremely good social group within the placement students, and we made sure to provide support to each other and enjoy our time outside of work together too.
I lived at home during my placement year, as I was already local within Newcastle, so the cost of living was not very high for myself and I took the opportunity during the year to save some money for my future. Even though I lived at home I was still able to socialise and enjoy my time outside of work as Newcastle and the areas around are normally cheaper.
The area within Newcastle that I worked is about 10 minutes outside the city centre and the area has a very good night life with many university nights.
There is a sports and social club in work which allowed many different opportunities, from football trips, golf, Go Karting to theatre and music festival tickets at discounted prices.
