    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I have absolutely no regrets about completing my Industrial Placement at Morgan Stanley. I felt valued as a worker and a person from day 1. The training provided is unrivalled and thorough, whether industry wide or on-the-job. My placement consisted of 5 rotations over the year, as well as work shadowing opportunities in other divisions. This resulted in me gaining great exposure to the bank, providing me with a great insight into what I may want to pursue upon graduation. The opportunities outside of the office are also extensive, with a big part of Morgan Stanley's culture revolving around 'giving back'. This is shown with MS partnering with Great Ormond Street hospital to provide opportunities such as the BT Tower Climb, Dragon Boat racing and Self-managed Intern Challenges. I also joined the Firm's rugby team, competing against London Firms in the Inter-City Leagues. This helped me to build networks and friendships that will last long after my placement is finished.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I definitely felt a part of every team I joined with great responsibility entrusted on you, whether day-to-day processes or larger projects. You also build from the ground up, so never feel overwhelmed or out of your depth. Even if this does occur the support network to help you is extensive.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • The support network at Morgan Stanley is extensive. Upon joining any team you are given goals, with weekly or bi-weekly meetings to document and discuss your progress. You are also provided with a 'buddy' that will be your go-to for any problems or queries you may encounter.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I found this varied day to day, depending on how busy the team was and the time of the year. On the whole you are certainly provided with enough to complete and never had any issues asking for more work. The work is also very varied, so to provide a great opportunity to improve on many skills.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • At Morgan Stanley you are treated like any full time employee. Obviously the work is tailored to your skill set and you are never chucked in the deep end, but you are certainly afforded great opportunities to prove your abilities to the team.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I found that not only did I develop hard skills e.g; Microsoft Office packages and other software used, but also my professional ones. I am definitely leaving as a more confident and competent person.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere here at Morgan Stanley is fantastic. When you start, everyone states the cliché that the people make the Bank, but it is 100% correct. I have been fortunate to work at 3 other financial institutions and MS was the best by far. Everyone is approachable and more than happy to help - which leads to a great atmosphere in the office. My department in particular had casual Fridays each week, provided at least one social event and one active event each month as well as sweepstakes during all major sporting events. This all contributed to professional, but also relaxed and friendly environment.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement itself was really well organised by HR. The rotations were pre planned and well managed. I did have a couple of experiences whereby one move was cancelled half way through a rotation and then another one was sprung upon me at a weeks notice which lead to me being a little unsettled and unsure, but on the whole I feel positive about the year.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The investment in employees at MS are unrivalled. As an Intern you are provided 3 days of training before you get into the office, alongside Firmwide and on-the-job training. You are given goals with every team you go into as well as regular progress meetings. I definitely felt that I was constantly supported and am definitely leaving as a more well-rounded individual.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would 100% recommend Morgan Stanley as a Firm and would definitely like to return should the opportunity arise. This is a fantastic well-rounded company, with great opportunities in and out of the office.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Social life at Morgan Stanley is great. Each department has a Social Committee, with drinks, days out and sporting evenings arranged in-house. The intern network is also extensive, with plenty of opportunity to go out and network with people from all areas of the Bank. You also have fantastic opportunity to meet others through Charity events and Sporting teams that take place throughout the year.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I lived a home, but most rented accommodation ranges from £9-15k depending on location. Living in London is very expensive, especially at bars and social events, but you are more than compensated accordingly by the Firm through London weighting. The biggest difference was drinks at University would be as low as £1, at Canary Wharf it could be more than 5x that.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London is an amazing city and having lived here my entire life outside of university, the nightlife is incredible. I could have gone out to a new place every night of my Placement year and still have options to explore.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • As stated earlier in the review, opportunities outside of work are vast. Whether Sport, Charity or social, any intern will definitely not be left disappointed at Morgan Stanley.
