    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed working at Intel, my role was varied and I got a chance to travel to Munich and Rome. Some jobs were more monotonous but most were interesting and challenging. I was given a lot of responsibility from day one which was good. I also got involved in a lot of different areas and different projects and was able to work more on the areas I enjoyed.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt very valued by my colleagues. I was mostly treated as an equal. Sometimes there was a slight border between interns and permanent staff but generally colleagues treated me very well. Intern was not in my job title so many of my overseas colleagues and customers did not know I was an intern which meant they did not treat you any differently.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • In my role I worked independently for most of my projects. I liked this way of working as I meant I could do things in my own time. My supervisor was still there to help if needed but a lot of things I did completely on my own by the end of the year. However I do think this varies depending on your manager.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied my quarter and by the week within the quarter. At the end of a quarter I tended to be very busy but I'd have a lot of free time at the start of the quarter. I was very busy for a few months when helping out with an event in March. But afterwards I had quite a bit less to do. This varied between roles, but mine was good for me.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From the start I was given a lot of responsibility, which I appreciated as they trust you with a lot of important work. Once you prove yourself they give you more responsibility and I ended up organising a whole part of an event all by myself. Just because you're an intern doesn't mean they trust you any less with responsibilities but you do have to earn it.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I think the experience I got from intel will be extremely valuable after my degree when looking for a job. This is due to the varied work I completed where I got to hone many different skills including leadership, IT skills, working independently and within a group and many other areas. I'm not sure yet how much it will help with my degree.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • For most of the time it was quite chilled out, you can work whichever is easiest for you, so you can go down and work in the cafĂ© for a bit it you prefer it or work in a meeting room. However my area of the office did tend to be quite quiet most days due to some people working from home etc. which can be quite boring on a Friday afternoon as Interns aren't allowed to work from home.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The placement was very well organised and gave you many different opportunities to enhance your skills and experience. It was set up well so you had your own role that no one else was doing and generally didn't get bored. You had your own desk and space and got bonuses like everyone else.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • We only received formal training at the start of the year and this was mostly for internal tools and general Intel knowledge. However due to them giving you a variety to jobs you learn a lot on the job and they ask whether you'd like to do some work for another department along side you normal work to enhance your skills.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Company Parties/Events

    Above 25 days holiday

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Generally quite good however recently they have been doing job cuts so they may not be hiring as many graduates in next year. They also not hire back into my department so I would need to apply back to a different department, which I may not enjoy as much as my current one.

    2/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yeah there was a nice atmosphere with the fellow interns. There were 50ish of us.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I chose not to live in Swindon and commuted from Bristol but Swindon is quite cheap in general.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't go out much in Swindon as I lived in Bristol but it was ok when I did go.

    3/5
