    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Overall I have really enjoyed my placement. I have had the chance to travel, and have been involved in a wide variety of sectors throughout the business (finance, marketing, events etc) which I feel has increased by experience and given me a better idea of the kind of career I would like to be in. My only problem has been there has not been enough work available for the majority of the year, so the job did get a bit dull. Also, I applied for a marketing placement, but was given a more financial role. Even though I have enjoyed the year and developed a lot of understanding around this area, it would have been better had the job req been more clear, as advertising it as a "marketing internship" is misleading.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The team I was in are generally very welcoming (although slightly clickey). The other interns in the team and I were all involved in staff meetings and invited to social events, and given responsibility in the marketing events and activities, so it certainly felt like we were an asset to the team. The only issue was that it was difficult to get involved in other jobs outside of the team when there was no work available, it seemed like there wasn't much cross communication and "sharing" of activities/ resources across different teams.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • My manager was often very busy, so if i needed support i would need to reach out to her rather than having a frequent one to one. Even though we didn't catch up on a regular basis i did feel the support was there if i required it, and I valued not being micro managed. Also, at the beginning of my placement she offered much more support until she could see i was both capable and comfortable with the work. The team i was in was also there to go to if my supervisor was not available.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • For the majority of the year i would not have enough to fill my day with which was quite demotivating. Around the channel marketing event i was working slightly longer hours (8-7 or so) which was fun and more fast pace, but this was only for a month before and during the event itself. Towards the end of my placement the work massively dried up as it seemed that management did not want to provide any more work as i was leaving soon, despite telling them that the intern replacing me would need the extra work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • The best thing about my placement has been the amount of responsibility i have been given. I was my managers first port of call for managing the 30 million dollar budget available to the channel marketing team, so helped in deploying this and the organisation of funds. I was also in charge of working with an agency to put together a magazine that was to be printed and distributed to over 900 customers. I have also had the opportunity to work directly with customers, influencing sales and offering key product information.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • After undertaking a placement year i am far more employable than i was before. I feel I've learnt more transferable skills this year than i have in my full time at university. Learning how to interact in an organisation, email, excel, customer interaction and presentation skills are just a few of the key areas that have been developed massively.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Generally, its a very relaxed culture, everyone dresses relatively casually and it isn't strict (no one minded if you needed to take a personal call or went to get a coffee etc). However, It was very quiet, a lot of people worked from home towards the end of the week, this was generally because a lot of the people who worked there had families or lived far away.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • At the beginning it was very well organised - a 5 week handover which was more than enough time to get me up to speed on what was required. In this time lots of meetings and training courses were set up so we developed a better understanding of the teams we were in, the company values and use of software. There were also lots of social events to get those who were living away from home/ uni to get to know other interns, The only criticism is after this stage there needs to be more development - eg offering different opportunities and other jobs.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • There were a wide variety of training courses available (presentation, leadership etc), these were advertised in a newsletter that was sent out every so often, anyone was allowed to register for these at no extra cost. At the beginning of the internship there was a lot of mandatory online training courses. However, as mentioned previously there wasn't much opportunity to get involved in different areas of the business.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?

    International Travel

    Financial Bonus

    Above 25 days holiday

    Healthcare/Dental

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Pretty much all of the few graduate jobs available are operations based. I'm looking for a job in sales or marketing so for me there are not really any job prospects. Also, if i was interested in an operations role, it is far more difficult to get a job having not worked as an intern in the operations department, as they tend to offer all of their graduate roles to those who had worked in the team previously.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There was a big community of interns (around 50) and everyone tended to socialise at the weekends/ after work (lots lived together). I lived at home during my placement so didn't tend to get so involved in the social side as my commute was quite far, but had i wanted to there was plenty of integration events available at the beginning of the year and lots of nights out, day trips and after work cinema nights that I could have gone to.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As mentioned previously, I lived away from work, but the other interns said it was really cheap to rent (less that £300 a month) and public transport was a pretty standard price. Lots of chain restaurants, cinemas etc around so socialising was a relatively standard price. The only good thing about being in Swindon is that it's quite close to other big cities (London in under an hour on the train, Bristol in 40 mins) so easy and relatively cheap to travel elsewhere.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Awful - Swindon!!

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Not that i was aware of
