    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed my time working with MGAM. Worked with some great colleagues and had the chance to be involved in lots of different types of work and get some good experience. Interesting work with a fast pace made it a pretty invigorating year, albeit occasionally quite high stress and intense.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • My colleagues made me feel very valued during my 12 month placement. People were for the most part friendly and accommodating, which helped with settling in a lot. Also made me feel very comfortable with asking questions or asking for help. The site I was at organised nights out every 2 months or so and my colleagues also were useful in giving advise for where to go in a town that I'd never been to before (Southampton).

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Generally I was given support when I really needed it although there is an expectation that placement students do their best to tackle problems on their own. I personally found this useful as a learning experience although it felt a bit sink or swim when I started. Management also provided me with development in the form of monthly key actions to complete and presentations to management, which gave me an opportunity to work on my presentations skills and get guidance on my work so far.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Working in production development meant that workload could differ depending on orders from customers. However I was generally very busy after my first two months at Morgan, which did lead to staying after hours quite often. This was partly due to the site I worked at being itself understaffed and so everyone had a lot of responsibilities. While it was a very busy placement, most of the time it was still manageable with proper organisation.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given fairly large responsibilities early on in my placement. The projects I was set for the year had real impacts for the growth of the business and as such definitely made me feel valuable to the team. Decisions and contributions I made were respected and used and I certainly do not feel like my time was wasted with the projects I worked on. This did on occasion mean a high stress level surrounding work but in general made working with Morgan much more engaging and exciting.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Over my time with Morgan I have had the chance to greatly develop general skills such as organisation, time management, decision making, problem solving and teamwork to name a few. This has come mainly as a results of having to use these skills every single day. I have also had the opportunity to improve on my presentation skills thanks to numerous presentations made to management during my time with Morgan. I also received Minitab software training and gained a lot of lab work experience. All of this has been very useful returning to university and has helped me better approach and complete work. After graduation I also will feel much more comfortable entering the professional world having already familiarised myself with business language and procedure.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was generally quiet and professional. Colleagues were friendly and would occasionally have conversations across the room however people would mostly concentrate on their own work during office hours and discussions were mostly taken to meeting rooms. The atmosphere would definitely become lighter approaching the end of the week and after 5 there would be a much more relaxed atmosphere. On the factory shop floor, the feeling was much more talkative but also more busy, with more activity going on.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Initial organisation of the placement left a bit to be desired as I did not find out about where I would be placed until 3 weeks before starting. Apart from that the placement was organised and I had a set role and goals when I started.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I was given training to use software. No other training was invested in me and I did a lot of learning on the job. I was however directed towards useful reading and techniques to help me out when starting.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • International Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I am very interested in a position on the Morgan graduate scheme and would welcome the opportunity to work with Morgan again as I enjoyed my placement and it would be great to do similar work with the added benefits of the grad scheme. Working at Morgan for a year has given me a pretty good idea of what this would be like as much of the day to day work I did was similar to that of a graduate.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene amongst my colleagues was pretty good. There were nights out organised by colleagues about once every 1-2 months which helped get me acquainted with the local nightlife as well as be a chance to bond with colleagues. As well as nights out I also played squash with some colleagues and even went climbing with some. This was particularly good when I started as I didn't know many people in the area so it helped me settle in.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was living in Southampton which was on the whole very cheap. Rent was only £300 a month as I lived in the student area and there was a Lidl right next to work and an Aldi near where I lived which made groceries pretty cheap. Drinks on nights out were also pretty reasonable and not like normal Southern prices (although pubs further out in Hampshire were more expensive). Membership prices at local gyms were also very good.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Southampton nightlife was pretty decent with a variety of clubs doing different types of music and most weekends had some big acts performing. There were also lots of pubs in the town and several local music festivals in the summer. Southampton is also home to the infamous Jesters, the worst club in the UK.

    4/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Being in a small city meant there was a lot of opportunity to get involved with various activities.
