    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I enjoyed the insight programme very much. The wide variety and relatively fast pace of the activities kept me engaged throughout the day. Moreover, the graduate recruitment team contributed to a warm and informal atmosphere which helped me to feel more comfortable and relaxed at the firm and make the best of the programme.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • To a large extent. Everyone I met in the firm made an effort to make the participants of the scheme feel welcome, and include us in their activities. For instance, during job shadowing, the lawyers I met - and not just my trainee buddies - made conscious efforts to accommodate me by explaining their work more thoroughly and clearly and inviting questions.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • Plenty of guidance and support was made available throughout the insight. I appreciate the effort that was made to allow participants to meet up and interact with a wide variety of employees from the firm, in different stages of their career. They were all open to sharing more about their experiences and offering advice, and a few also offered their contact details in case we had any more questions after the insight.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I believe what I have learned from the scheme will not specifically assist in my degree, as the skills and information are more applicable to practical situations beyond academic studies. For instance, the personal branding workshop has given me a better understanding of emotional intelligence, which will alter the way I handle myself and manage my thoughts, in an effort to achieve greater self-awareness.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • I think the mix of ‘passive’ and ‘active’ activities (e.g. talks and job shadowing respectively) was well-structured and contributed to the solid pace of the programme. The variety of activities were also tailored and structured to address the main concerns of students interested in a career in commercial law very well. They were clearly very organised and the transition between activities was practically seamless.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The general atmosphere was friendly, fun, and pleasantly informal. It took a while for the participants to warm up to each other, but the social activities and personable graduate recruitment team helped to facilitate the process. It was a pleasure to be among so many like-minded peers exploring a potential career option in the best way possible via the scheme, and having an enjoyable time throughout, be it more 'serious' events about commercial law, or the lighthearted, fun-packed social evening.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A large extent. Apart from giving us a thorough introduction to the firm and commercial law, Linklaters also invested in participants' personal training and development, perhaps most notably through the highly informative personal branding workshop. We also had a commercial awareness workshop, which taught us how to analyse certain cases from various perspectives.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • The insight did give me a much better understanding of the role of lawyers in various departments, and the nature of the transactions and work that they handle. However the scheme was limited in providing a more comprehensive insight into a full time role at the firm primarily because of time constraints. It is difficult to truly grasp that over just two days, especially when job shadowing was only for two afternoons, and we were not actively involved in the work ourselves.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • The insight helped to a great extent, namely because of the numerous opportunities we had to mingle with the company's employees.

    4/5

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • The scheme was extremely valuable to me in that respect. Although I was originally already certain of pursuing a career in commercial law, the content of the insight programme reaffirmed that conviction. Moreover, it also made me even more enthusiastic about the possibility of embarking on this career path at Linklaters in particular.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • Participants were not paid for attending this scheme, and I was not reimbursed any expenses because I stay in London. From my understanding however, those staying outside London were reimbursed for their travel expenses. The firm provided one night's accommodation, and transport to it after the first day's events, for their convenience as well.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • There were opportunities to network and meet other Linklaters employees at literally almost every moment throughout the programme. A partner introduced us to the firm and entertained a number of questions. At least one or two graduate recruitment team members were always close by, while we had the chance to speak to trainees and associates during meals and social events.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • The social event and networking opportunities were fun-packed and highly engaging. The most memorable was definitely the evening event on the first day, where we had the chance to get to know fellow participants on the scheme and the firm's employees better while learning how to make cocktails, pasta, and decorate cupcakes.

    5/5

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • As the scheme focused on introducing us to a career in commercial law, or more specifically at Linklaters, there was not much talk about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work. However, we did get to visit the excellent gym open for employees to use in the firm, and were told about the language lessons and subsidies available.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Absolutely. I could not recommend this insight scheme enough, and I will be telling my friends to sign up for it next year. The insight programmes available for first-year law students are unfortunately largely limited to one-day programs at most law firms who offer it, but a two-day program does make a marked difference in how much you can takeaway from the experience at the end of it. Moreover, this is definitely one of the most enjoyable and enriching insight programmes I have attended.
