    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?
  • I absolutely loved it. It was two weeks and I felt like I was truly immersed in the firm. I was able to not only attend presentation, skills sessions and workshops, but actually sit on a desk and shadow as many areas in global markets as possible. Therefore, I was able to see what it is actually like and start to think about where I would like to be positioned in the future.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • I felt very valued. Nomura has a very flat structure, so I felt able to go up to anyone of any position and ask them for help or ask about their experiences and they were more than willing to oblige. On my desk I was able to research and contribute towards two different pieces of work which were published. I was given responsibility, which was a great experience and very valuable.

  • 3. How much guidance/support did you receive during the insight?
  • There was a lot of support and guidance. Everyone is allocated a mentor and a buddy, as well as their desk manager and programme manager. Each person helped me to settle in to the firm, to meet other people and to complete my project. As well as this, everyone on my desk helped me with any queries I had. I also shadowed lots of other desks where everyone was more than happy to explain their role and experiences within the firm and the industry.

  • 4. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and information you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • It has helped me with my degree, as I have realised particular topics that cover crucial skills to work in global markets, Therefore, I can tailor my module choices to help me in the future. It also broadened my understanding of economic and political news influences one another and of some key trends in the market. It has also helped to confirm my desire to work in global markets and shown me a good overview of the different sections within, which will help looking forward.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • The organisation and structure was of the programme was very good. I had a clear programme set out for me and was aware of when tasks needed to be completed by. There was a good range between working on the desk, working on my project, networking/shadowing other desks and skills/informational presentations. I was able to have great exposure to global markets due to the structure.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • The atmosphere was very welcoming. Everyone has been willing to help and advise in whatever ways possible. It is not like films make it out to be and everyone works professionally. I have felt very comfortable every day and due to the atmosphere feel like I can speak to anyone and they will be willing to listen.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • They definitely invested in us. They created many sessions trying to improve our networking, presentation, CV, cover letter and interview skills. They advised us on how to progress to the next stage and continue developing our career paths. Whilst on the desk by being given the opportunity to contribute to the work of the desk I learnt how to research effectively and improve writing concisely, which will help in both my future career and university studies.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • It did this very well. The ability to not only have presentations hearing the theory about the industry and firm, we had interactive sessions where we were able to pitch stocks and a trading game where we found out more. However the most important way this was achieved has to be through the desk placement. Actually sitting on the different desks and shadowing people is the best way to understand how a full time role would be.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • I feel like I really understand the culture now. Whilst talking to employees it is clear to see from everyone how the theory of how the firm should work actually works in practice. There is a very flat structure, so it is possible to talk to anyone in any role or level. I really like the integrity of the firm and it is definitely the culture that has made my experience so enjoyable.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • It has been very helpful. I was almost certain I wanted to go into investment banking beforehand. but I was unsure of which division. I can now say that I definitely want to be a part of global markets. I have a much better understanding of the different areas of global markets and feel prepared to continue and realise where is best for me to specialise in the future.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Yes there were many opportunities. We had a networking event before the programme started. We then had a networking presentation and lunch so that we could meet as many people as possible. Networking has been very easy, as if you would like to meet someone or sit with them, you only have to ask and they are more than happy to oblige. Also, people are very willing to introduce you to others at any opportunity.
