About You
I really enjoyed it. I met many friendly analysts who helped me with whatever I needed. I got to get involved in real project even though the insight was only for 2 weeks.
Even if I did not have so much knowledge or previous experience and therefore could not contribute as much as I would have liked to, I felt like the work I did was very appreciated.
Whoever I asked for advice was very helpful. Even the more senior employees were always ready to help when I asked for it.
I believe that I really got a chance use the material we leaned in school and practise it. It developed my understanding for financial markets which will surely help in future studies.
The Company
The insight was very well structured. There was a good balance between workshops/scheduled sessions and desk work.
There was a very friendly atmosphere. Also, people seemed very open and relaxed, but at the same time remaining their professional image.
They invested a lot of time and energy giving me relevant work to do and planning helpful workshops and events. Even though I only applied for the Investment Banking division, I still got exposure to the main functions of Global Markets and Corporate Infrastructure though workshops. Even though I am determined to focus on investment banking the workshops increased my understanding for the bank as a whole.
As I, the majority of the time, was at my desk working, I got a very good insight on what the life of an analyst actually is like. I got to do Company Overviews, create graphs and tables in Excel, research about recent IPOs etc. Doing basic analyst-work definitely increased my understanding of what the job is about.
I got a very good understanding of the company culture as I got to take part of real work, and not only attend planned workshops and events as in some other spring weeks.
It was very valuable. I feel confident that I would enjoy Investment Banking after these two weeks.
Everything Else
This is a paid internship and the travel expenses are reimbursed. However, we have to pay accommodation for ourselves, and therefore (if not all) the majority of the salary will be used for paying the rent for our temporary apartment/hotel if you do not live in London already of course). I managed to team up with another intern and we lived together and split the costs. I would strongly recommend living with another intern, since this is a great opportunity to get a new friend.
Since I got the opportunity to sit among the Investment Bankers on the floor, networking opportunities were all around me. Anytime I could ask someone if they would like to take a coffee for example. Also, during lunches the whole team that you are working with (either consumer, TMT etc. in IBD) go and grab lunch. I would recommend anyone to take these casual moments to get to know the team better.
There were a few organised social event/networking opportunities but I believe that the best opportunities to network was when working on the floor.
I did not explore outside work opportunities that much during my internship. However, I know that the employees like to work out in Nomura's gym.
I would recommend this insight to anyone who would like to work in Investment Banking.
