    About You

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy the insight?

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued during your time at the company or firm?
  • Every second of the day they reassured that they valued our commitment to come to the day and were impressed by us. The firm sent out a really clear message that they valued everyone who worked their for more than just their abilities as a lawyer.

    The Company

  • 5. How well structured was the insight?
  • Very well structured. Clear program of things to do, was never left without a job to do or a workshop to go to. From the second we got there we were given a programme of the two days and encouraged to ask questions about anything we were unclear about.

  • 6. How was the general atmosphere during your insight?
  • Very positive, met partners, associates and trainees who were all thrilled to see us. Everyone gave off a very positive vibe, from the first person i met to the trainee i shadowed, helping me understand Law better and also making me feel relaxed.

  • 7. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • The whole day was clearly a huge investment from the firm. Partner time as well as associates and project leads, who came out of their way to talk to us about what we could achieve at Herbert Smith Freehills. They gave us time and lots of skills workshops that made me feel confident that they wanted us to come to the assessment centres. After I left I felt like I was welcome back at any point, and encouraged to apply next year for a Summer Vacation Scheme.

  • 8. To what extent did the insight help you to understand what it would be like to have a full time role with the company or firm?
  • When shadowing for the second day of my time at Herbert Smith Freehills i gained clear insight into what a day would be like at the firm. Everyone was very upfront about the level of work expected right from the beginning. All of the trainees had a positive approach to this and made it clear that while working there is tough it is equally rewarding. I strongly believed they wanted to make clear to us just how hard working they are, so that both us and them were not wasting time. Overall, I feel as though I understand life as a lawyer, much, much more thanks to the insight.

  • 9. How much did the insight help you in understanding the company culture?
  • We had lots of talks on the company culture, as well as getting to know trainees who explained as well. We were talked through the whole process of coming to work at Herbert Smith Freehills, and it was a really friendly atmosphere. Going through the offices everyone seemed very on top of their game, but also friendly and welcoming, even if they weren't involved in the insight. Just shadowing in the office gave me a huge sense of what the company is like.

  • 10. How valuable was the content in helping you to decide on your future career path?
  • Hugely valuable, as a non-law student this day helped me get my mind in order about what i would want to do in the law. As I remain undecided on career paths, it was hugely useful to get an insight into what being a lawyer is like. Getting to speak to other lawyers about their career paths also helped me immensely, as they revealed that a Law degree was not as invaluable as i first thought. The company was also very supportive of non-law students and explained exactly the process necessary to work at Herbert Smith Freehills.

    Everything Else

  • 11. Were you paid or reimbursed adequately for this experience?
  • They also offer a hotel room for anyone coming outside of London and free meals for the days that you are there, both lunch and dinner.

  • 12. Were there opportunities for networking and meeting other employees of the company or firm?
  • Throughout the day there i met many different partners and associates who gave me cards and talked to me at lunch about their career paths. Furthermore there was an evening social on the first night, hosted in a near by arcade/restaurant called Bounce. This was a more relaxed atmosphere where many of the associates told you a bit more about what is required at assessment days and what the company is really looking for.

  • 13. How were the networking/ social event opportunities?
  • There was an evening social on the first night, hosted in a near by arcade/restaurant called Bounce. This was a more relaxed atmosphere where many of the associates told you a bit more about what is required at assessment days and what the company is really looking for. Further to this all the lunches and down time was accompanied by trainees and associates, I spoke to 6 separate people all with unique perspectives.

  • 14. Did you find out about activities that employees can get involved in outside of work?
  • Yes, lots of opportunities for sport, travel and arts. Firstly, they promote cycle to work schemes, as well as free gym memberships. Secondly, they have rooms for music within the building, for people to practice during the week. Thirdly, If you come to work in the London office you are guaranteed an opportunity to travel abroad within your first three years with the company.

  • 15. Would you recommend this insight to a friend?
  • Definitely, It was a great day, really enjoyable and eye opening. Regardless of wether you have looked at law it is worth applying and going if you are available. Before the insight day i wasn't that keen on law as a profession, however the day really made me think about it as a viable option. I will be applying for more opportunities at Herbert Smith Freehills, in the following years in order to explore their company more.
