    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • As HR is quite a small department, I work closely with all members of my team, helping me to learn about all aspects of HR from recruitment to training. I am also given responsibility to manage my own projects, which involve working with people from a number of different departments. As a result of this, I have managed to develop a number of skills, particularly my organisation, time management and teamwork skills. What I enjoy most about RCI is the culture. People are always willing to help, and answer questions, and your contribution is really valued. As well as this, they are always things going in the office which encourage teamwork, from Bake-Offs to Sports Competitions.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Working in a small team means that you get to work closely with all members of the department. As a result of this you not only learn about all aspects of HR, but you also feel like part of the team and that your work is valued. This has been one of the best parts of my placement, as I was always made to feel welcome, encouraged to ask questions and get involved with the team.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • At the start of my placement I had a handover period with the previous HR intern which helped me to familiarize myself with all of my daily tasks. Following this, I was always given lots of support, advice and guidance in the tasks I was doing from the rest of the team. As well as this I was also given a lot of independence to complete tasks by myself.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • There has always been plenty of work to do so far on my placement at RCI. As I get to work with all members of my team, I get the chance to focus on lots of different tasks from helping organize assessment days to planning exciting events for the employees.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Once my induction period was complete I was given a lot of responsibility during my placement. I was left to complete daily tasks by myself, and was often given projects to complete independently. As a result of this I really felt like a member of the team, and that my work was really valued.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I have developed so far will definitely assist me in my degree and beyond. Firstly, it will help with my degree as it is such a fascinating place to work and therefore will make an interesting topic for my dissertation. As well as this, my managers are very aware and supportive of what I need to get out of my work placement, and help me to make sure I achieve this. Finally I am sure that my year at RCI will help me in my future as I have been able to develop a wide range of skills which will be important when I start looking for graduate jobs.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I was given a handover period by the previous intern, which helped me to familiarize myself with all of my daily tasks I was required to do. Over our induction period me and the other interns were introduced to each department and told more about what they do, which helped us get to know people in the office.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Over our induction period we were introduced to people in every department, and given more information about what they do. We also attended workshops to strengthen our understanding of the KPIs, the products and what the company does as a whole. After the induction period I had a much stronger understanding of the company, which helped me in my day to day role.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes, we often go out as a team to meals and events. As well as this it's great to work for a company that has a number of other interns as it makes settling in to the company even easier. Next year the program is growing, so I'm sure the social scene will be just as good if not better!

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • As Watford is just a short train to London the cost to rent is not that cheap, however I have managed to rent somewhere close to the office with two other interns so the cost is manageable.
