    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • American Express did a fantastic job of making me feel welcome from my very first day. In addition to the fantastic work experience I received during the summer internship, there was also a huge variety of social activities such as theatre trips, drinks and a volunteering day which I was very fortunate to partake in.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • The emphasis on relationships is one of the most positive aspects of American Express in my opinion. Every single person I met whether they were a buddy or a VP were overwhelmingly friendly. I feel this is such an asset to any company as it meant I was immediately able to feel comfortable and confident to dive straight into my job projects.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Support and guidance was always available. I was able to meet with my manager twice a week formally but also always felt I could ask his advice at any time and he would make time for me. Likewise all other employees, even from other teams, were very happy to sacrifice their time to meet with me and give me their advice and knowledge on the industry.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I was always busy but feel this internship gives you the opportunity to contribute as much or as little as you so choose. All interns were given a main project to focus on but I was also able to get involved in other areas as I wished.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • From my personal experience and hearing from other fellow interns, American Express make a great deal of effort to give their interns real responsibilities during the internship. I was given a full end-to-end project to begin and complete during my 10 weeks for example which was very exciting!

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Studying for a combined honours degree in Politics and French my placement opened my eyes to the world of Marketing that I previously had no experience in. I have learnt so much from my placement whilst expanding my already existing competencies such as project leadership, self-discipline, public speaking among other things.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Incredibly friendly and positive! There was also a lot of free food around the office on a regular basis and a Bake Off competition which everyone loved.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • The organisation was immaculate. From the initial 2 days training and introduction through to the final presentations and conclusions, it was made very clear how things would work for us.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Personal training was ongoing. I am a prime example of someone who had zero experience in the given field I was working in and yet I never felt out of my depth with the support and training provided for me.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Sports and Social Club

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    National Travel

    Company Parties/Events

    Working from home

    Healthcare/Dental

    5/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I fortunately received a graduate job offer with American Express and signed straight away. I cannot wait to begin once I finish at university.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes!! American Express organised lots of social activities for the placement students which were great fun and gave everyone the opportunity to really get to know each other much better.

    5/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I was fortunate enough to be living with a family friend during my internship which helped massively with living costs. However, my experience of socialising was very positive. The area I would say was reasonable for London and as an Amex employee we received various discounts at local restaurants and bars.

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The office is based in Victoria which is a beautiful part of London and very central for exploring all the exciting nightlife London has to offer.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes. Amex has a variety of sports clubs to get involved in among employees for example. There were often team drinks and social activities organised too which was great.
