    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • An excellent insight into industry. The induction course made sure that I was not out of place when joining my team and understood some of the more technical elements of the industry. Once I joined a team I was given a lot of responsibility and my own (meaningful) projects which were important to the work of the team. This made the internship very rewarding.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Whilst initially I was not given work that I felt contributed to the productivity of the team, my manager and colleagues were excellent at explaining how the project fitted together and how my work mattered. As a result I felt that I was for all intents and purposes a normal member of staff and received no different treatment for being an intern.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Again, the management in my team was excellent. One of the perks of being in a smaller team was the close knit community feeling. I did feel throughout that I received very little feedback, however, owing to the very time sensitive nature of my teams project I understood that this would be inevitable. Once I raised this with my manager he was more than happy to discuss my work within the team and how I might improve.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • I found myself working very long days during the internship arriving around an hour before contracted hours and leaving (most days) around an hour or two after. On a few occasions I stayed beyond 7 but did not feel that I was obliged to stay and never felt that I was given unreasonable deadlines which would mandate my staying late.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • During my internship I worked almost exclusively with a piece of software used in insurance. When my team began to input data into this software I was given a great deal of responsibility and ended up showing more senior members of staff from other lines of business how the software worked. This was extremely satisfying and I felt that the approach of the team towards individuals specific skills was excellent.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The skills I developed through my internship will be of very little use during my degree and the rest of my time at university. They will, however, be invaluable in the 'real world' and I feel that rejoining as a graduate I will have many useful skills that I learned during the 8 weeks I spent with Aon over summer.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Excellent. Working closely with very senior members of staff meant that the team was constantly aware of the pressures it faced, however, this never effected the team dynamic and communication was excellent. I felt that the right balance was struck, there was a good amount of 'fun' but it never became unprofessional.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I believe that I was the first intern in my team and as such no-one knew what to expect. Whilst I did not have a direct 'graduate buddy' which other teams had paired their interns with, the team was very responsive to all my questions and everyone assisted me when I was confused.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • An excellent (and I believe very expensive!) induction meant that I was fully prepared for the work I would be doing and felt confident going into the team. Other members of my team had just completed their ACII exams at Aon's expense and this is something which is offered to all graduates in my stream so I am confident that I will achieve these qualifications too.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • As mentioned above I have secured a job within the Aon graduate scheme. I am not sure of the process by which you get promoted within Aon of the long term prospects I have joining the company, however, I am sure this will be explained during the Graduate Scheme induction etc.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were very few organised social events, however, Aon provided functions after the intern events which enabled us to network with colleagues from other offices. Beyond this there was very little social interaction as many interns were simply too busy or poor to go out after work! I don't think this is any criticism of Aon though.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • London prices

    1/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • London nightlife - very good. Team socials were also very fun and at high end wine bars etc which was definitely an unexpected perk.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • The Corporate Social Responsibility project provided us with a chance to carry out charity work and allowed us to dedicate half a day per week to non-commercial aspects of being in a large organisation. I know that Aon have multiple sports teams, running and cycling clubs, however, I did not feel there was much value in getting involved in these for 7 weeks.
