    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • Really enjoyed the work and the people in the office were lovely, welcoming and friendly. The work I was given was challenging but interesting and I learnt a lot from the experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • Feedback sessions were held with our manager which were extremely useful. It was hard to judge personal performance but colleagues were very forthcoming with their feedback, which I found extremely useful. As the internship is of short duration, this is harder to judge though.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Not only our manager, but also the colleagues and my buddy were very helpful and supportive. If I had any questions, regardless of who had given me the work, everyone was happy to try their best to help or refer me to someone who could answer my question. This support was also reflected in our project, as each group was given a facilitator, and ours was particularly helpful when we asked him questions, providing sufficient guidance and support without spoonfeeding us.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Initially I was really busy, which I thoroughly enjoyed as it meant that I was working efficiently and got to see a diverse range of work. It also encouraged me to perform at a higher level. However, towards the end of the internship, I found there was less work for me, despite asking around, and this made it difficult to make the most of the experience.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • In the office, a fair amount of responsibility was given in that interns were treated as members of the team - invited to socials, expected to do tea rounds, answer phones, attend meetings and complete a certain number of hours of work per week. Additionally, the 'do, check, scrutinise' process adopted by the company meant that interns were given responsibility but not enough that their mistakes, if any, would be carried forward. Being allowed to actually do work for clients was an invaluable experience. In the project, as it was an intern-based team, there was more responsibility available as it was up to us to speak to the client and coordinate our efforts.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • This experience has been invaluable in numerous ways - I have seen the work that actuaries do, spoken to people about their career paths so far, and gained various different transferable skills from this opportunity.

    5/5

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Really friendly atmosphere to work in - definitely a 'work hard, play hard' ethic, which is something I really admire of all the people in the office. They manage to ensure they have a work-life balance, finding time to socialise and relax, whilst also making sure they complete all their work to a high standard and efficiently.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Fairly organised in most respects although there were some organisational aspects lacking. For example, some buddies were away for the first week of the internship, which meant it was difficult for the interns to settle in. But, on the whole, the experience was smoothly run.

    4/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As we haven't had our final feedback conversations yet, I can't say. However, as I'm a very young intern - just finished my A-levels, compared to the normal 2nd or 3rd year university student - and as I'm hoping to study Law at university instead of a maths-based course, it's understandably difficult for the firm to invest in a student such as myself.

    3/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

    2/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment with this organisation would be excellent - obviously not something I'm considering specifically right now, but I would definitely like to come back for another internship next year! I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience - both because of the people and because of the work; and I've learnt an immense amount.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Good social scene in some aspects - a little more difficult as the other interns did not live in the local area and found it a little too quiet for their liking. Social activities held in the office such as exam results celebrations or leaving drinks were extended to the interns also.

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Lots of reasonably-priced restaurants around, there is a cinema nearby and a few pubs.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • There are some pubs and a few small clubs around Epsom, although transport links to areas such as London or Kingston, where there are more nightlife activities, were readily available. There weren't many opportunities to socialise in terms of nightlife - aside from after-work drinks at the pub - with work people, although this is to be expected as we were summer interns and only here for a few weeks.

    1/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • A few socialising events, but not too many.
