The Role
I enjoyed my placement, however I wish there was more information readily available for my placement job before leaving to go on the ship (I did a cruise management degree) -6
I felt very valued. My job is orientated around the team effort. It's a very demanding job but also rewarding. - 8
The management onboard were helpful to some extent. However depending on the manager at the time as managers onboard change ever four months some are better than others. - 7
12-14 hour shifts, 7 days A week, 7 months. Very busy everyday. More so on embarkation and disembarkation days (first and last days of the cruise/turnaround day) - 1 too busy
I was a Guest relations officer with celebrity cruises and was given a lot of responsibility. Although I worked with a team of people it was a very individualised job. Sometimes working alone for hours on end manning the phones and office computers. -8
In my degree not so much. In a further career they will be invaluable. Learning to work hard day in day out long hours, customer service, front desk hotel operations. -8
The Company
Pleasant and everyone worked well together. Managers helped with tricky guests when needed but otherwise let us empower ourselves and our colleagues. - 7
Not very well organised. Not on behalf of the uni side this was great. But u feel that there was not enough information readily available from the hiring partners at Celebrity. The information was there but as a new hire there was a lot I didnt know about and could have benefited from having more information. -4
Training was very important on the ship. First two weeks onboard was spent predominantly in a class room learning all the ship safety aspects such as emergency drills, what to do in case of an emergency onboard etc and two weeks spent on the job specific training. Reading manuals answering phones learning the ship and all the relevant information. -9

I would love to go back to the ship however I really did not enjoy the job - Guest Relations Officer so if I do go back I'd either try another department or another company. However I have been asked to come back, offered a promotion and a job with Celebrity cruises. - 10
The Culture
So many social activities onboard crew parties, wine and cheese evenings, food events, discos, themed parties, the crew life onboard is like nothing I have ever experienced before. Everybody is like family (2500 crew) it's amazing.
I didn't have to pay for my accommodation onboard or food however I did have to pay for my uniform and to get my cabin / uniform cleaned on a weekly basis. I also had to pay a hefty sum to obtain a American visa and medical before I could board the ship. Socialising was pretty cheap, the bars onboard for crew were relatively cheap and selection was good. - 5
Nightlife was good (depending on your shift time the next day) regular parties and social gatherings after work in the crew bar. - 5
Not really, other than destressing in the bar after a horrible 12 hour shift. If you were lucky enough to get off the ship then you usually lay on a beach or went to the bar, however if you were lucky enough to have more than a couple of hours off you could ask to go on a shore excursion (which were pretty good, depending on the port) -3
