    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • The work was good and varied, though sometimes there were periods of time where I had no work. This was because it was a consultancy, so this had to be expected.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • They were friendly, welcoming and treated me with respect. My opinion felt valued

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • When I needed help, I could ask and someone would help me. Also when new projects were given to me, my supervisor often took the time to explain the background of the project and what I would need to look into/do. I was also able to attend training courses, including technical and non technical

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • When I had work I was really busy, but sometimes there were periods of time where I had nothing to do. I tried to make the best of these situations by asking colleagues if they needed any help/had anything for me to do, or by researching areas I hadn't fully understood during my other projects.

    3/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was always told which tasks to do, but then given the responsibility of preparing the data for these tasks as well as completing them. So the methodology interpretation was often down to myself. We would have weekly team meetings to check that things were going correctly, and I could always ask if I needed help. I wasn't spoon fed in any means though.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I carried out LOPA and HAZOP studies so this helped with my degree a lot for my third year project. It also gave me an insight into calculations used. It also made me feel more confident to go into another engineering job and know where to start with projects etc.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • A nice balance of conversation and quietness.

    4/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • If you didn't ask, you wouldn't get told. So I learnt I had to ask the questions I wanted to know. So if I was being sent out of the office, I had to ask where I would be meeting the team I'd be working with, how I would be getting there etc. Otherwise they'd just assume I know and not tell me In terms of work, projects were sometimes thought of in advance of me completing current work, but often I would have to make sure something was lined up for me. Which could be hard when a supervisor has other people to manage and set work up for other than myself.

    3/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • As said, I went on several courses. If I wanted to go on any specific courses I could ask and if my manager thought it was relevant then that was fine. Often though I was signed up to courses that my manager thought were relevant, and this gave me a great insight into other areas of the business through a commercial awareness course, and also more technical aspects.

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    National Travel

    International Travel

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I enjoyed working for the company, though other sectors appeal to me more. I would definitely consider a job with them in the future, especially at the office I worked with. I actually received sponsorship from them, and so was able to carry out a summer placement with them the following year.

    3/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • We often ate lunch together and planned to do things after work

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I actually lived outside of the area I worked in so I don't know

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • Again, not sure. I went out a few times but not enough to make a judgement.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Yes, sports, quizzes.

    4/5
