The Role
I really enjoyed it, I had a huge variety of tasks to do on a daily basis. There was join emphasis on both learning and doing.
They were really helpful, and always took time out of their day to be patient and help. They trusted us to have an independent attempt at some of their consultancy work, and allowed us to be involved in their process.
My supervisor had regular meetings with me not only to ask how I was finding things, but also to provide feedback on my skills. This constructive approach I believe has given me skills to work on before I leave university and enter the workplace.
At the beginning there wasn't much to do, as I lacked the skills and knowledge to be a useful member of the team. However towards the end my days were packed, and I loved the challenges and the pressure.
Towards the end I was responsible for the first drafts of many important documents to go out to clients.
Hugely, I was involved in a consultancy role, which hasn't been a part of my degree training. This will be crucial as I apply for jobs in this sphere.
The Company
It was amazing! It was a reasonably small floor, with many people from many different teams. The atmosphere was really friendly, and everyone chatted and were fairly relaxed. This was a special surprise due to the stigma surrounding actuaries.
Really well organised. I felt valued as a person, and they built up my skills and knowledge over the course of the six weeks
Several one on one sessions to cover subject areas, but also a lot of time spent helping with calculations to help explain some of the finer details. Everyone in the team was involved and gave their time willing to help.
Very appealing, I applied in the weeks following the end of my placement.
The Culture
It was during the Edinburgh Fringe, so there was lots of things to do. However it was a small office, so opportunities for large socials were limited.
Quite high due to the rent prices during the Edinburgh festival.
Very lively, it was a very nice atmosphere the whole summer.
Not really
