    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I enjoyed the atmosphere that YouView works in, it is very relaxed but also allows you to be focused on the tasks that you need to complete. I enjoyed my day to day work that I completed but I also enjoyed the extra activities that the Placement students had to complete including fund raising for their Charity of the Year.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues on a regular basis as they appreciated the work that I provided for them, I enjoyed learning from my colleagues as it allowed me to be able to ease work load for them. This allowed the team to focus on improving other areas of their work.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had fortnightly 1-to-1 meetings with my line manager, during this we were able to discuss my progress with the team I was working with and how I felt the work load was going to discover if I felt I needed more or less work. This allowed me to talk freely in a relaxed environment with my manager.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Sometimes there were slow days, which occurred if everything was running smoothly, but it could also be very busy, often I didn't know how I would be until I arrived in the morning. However it did keep me on my toes as I could have been asked at any time to help with an incident.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I regularly had to create the Daily reports or the weekly reports which I needed to make sure that I had correctly completed as some of the data in the reports were vital for the company to make decision around the time of releases. I also regularly had to attend meetings so that i could bring any data that i felt would be useful to help make any decisions required.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I learned lots of skills that I believe will be necessary for me when I apply for graduate jobs, I have learned a lot of people skills and how to adapt my behaviour to the person I was talking too. I also learned skills in Looker, Jira and the Wiki, some of these services or similar services will be used be other companies as well.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere in the office was very relaxed; there was a relaxed dress code depending on the team you worked in. It is an open plan office and everyone sits together in your team, I think this helped you bond with your team early as well as the other teams that sat around you.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My placement was split into 3 sections so I moved team around every 4 months, this allowed me to learn a lot more about the company than a standard internship with the same team. There is good progression through weeks, I started with a couple of introduction weeks and shadow the other members of the team to see what they worked on before being set my own projects to complete.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • A lot of the training was on the job, which was fine as I was given plenty of time to understand the software I was using. I think this way of learning was more suited to be then attending a training session, there was an initial training session for looker, which helped in getting me over the first hurdle.

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social atmosphere was great, there were 10 interns over the summer which allowed us to do a few nights in the local pubs, it also made it a lot easier during lunch times as we could go of for lunch and sit by the river. There was also a summer and Christmas party which everyone in the office got involved with which was great giving the event a lovely atmosphere.
