    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed it - it was a really friendly workplace, and everyone was willing to help if I was stuck on a problem. The work was challenging but interesting, and as the projects developed I was able to work more autonomously, which is a freedom that is rare for an internship.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • They were all really friendly, and they all appreciated the work I was doing and were willing to help.

    5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • I had both a mentor, who helped me on a day-to-day basis, and a manager, who gave me weekly status meetings (but who was always available if I needed help with anything). They were both really helpful, and guided me if I was stuck but didn't just tell me what to do, allowing me the freedom to change the design as I saw fit.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • Never bored - there was always more that I could be usefully doing. On the other hand, I never felt I had too much to do as the projects were my own and so I could work at my own pace.

    5/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • Although I had a manager and a mentor to guide me, I was essentially free to do what I liked with my projects and to achieve the desired functionality however I wanted.

    4/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • Incredibly useful - being able to write software is one of the most useful skills to learn, and Metaswitch gave me a really good start, as they make sure they teach you good practices and offer advice whenever you need it. Also, I had to give an assessed presentation, and the feedback on that was really helpful.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The atmosphere was great - everyone was friendly, and there were loads of organised activities/sports during the lunch breaks, which were great fun.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • They offer accommodation which for me was literally across the road from the office, so couldn't have been more conveniently placed! They take lots of interns every summer, so they have good experience and it all runs smoothly.

    5/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • My mentor and manager both invested lots of time helping me to learn the tricks of the languages I was using, and even other members of the team were willing to help. They also gave me excellent feedback on my assessed presentation, which was extremely helpful.

    5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Subsidised Canteen

    Company Parties/Events

    4/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • I would love to work for them. if I choose to go into software engineering, then I'd definitely want to be there.

    4/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • There were 8 of us living in a house, and we had supper together every night which was great. There were maybe 30 interns in total, and the company provides money for "morale" which for us meant a trip to laser quest and pizza!

    4/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • The accommodation was subsidised by the company, and the local pubs were all very reasonable.

    4/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • It's not really my thing - I prefer pubs to clubs. There didn't seem to be much in the area, but it's very easy to get to central London from Enfield, so there's plenty there.

    2/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Any sport you can think of, there was a group of people playing it some lunchtime or evening.

    5/5
