    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed my internship with Aon this summer. I was given a lot of responsibility and felt appreciated for the things I did. On top of office work we were tasked with a CSR project with gave us the opportunity to work with fellow interns from various different sectors and offices this was a great experience.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I always felt valued by my colleagues. Everyone who passed work to me would provide positive feedback and encouragement throughout my internship. I was included in various projects from day one and supported through them during my internship. When I completed a piece of work colleagues would pass me further work making my efforts seem important.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • On day 1 of my internship I met my manager who helped introduce me to the office and helped me settle in. We would have regular catch up meetings throughout the 9 weeks during which he would learn of my progress and suggest solutions to any problems I was having. I could also talk to him about any issues outside of these meetings.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • At the beginning of the internship I found myself to be very busy. I always had things to be getting on with. Unfortunately, as the internship went on less and less work was getting passed along. That being said, if I ever ran out of work I could send out a team email to get more work.

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I was given a lot of responsibility during my internship with Aon. Colleagues trusted me to get on with work alone as soon as I began. I was also given the opportunity to develop my own models and took on a lot of responsibility for our corporate social responsibility project.

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • I will use the time management skills and the ability to prioritise certain projects I developed at Aon to help me balance my module workload and senior honours project during my final year at University. I also hope to use the professional skills I picked up at Aon in my future career.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • The general atmosphere in the office was welcoming yet professional. It was a very friendly environment to work in and I felt like a member of the team from day 1. It was a very nice atmosphere to work in and supportive colleagues who I could turn to if I ever had a problem surrounded me.

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • My internship at Aon was very well organised. Before I began we were given a link to a website on which we could find out information about the start of our internship and what was expected of us. The 3 training days we received were very structured. The rest of the internship was also well organised, my office knew was prepared for my arrival and had work for me to do. We were also updated on where we needed to be and when by the early careers team.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • 5/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Company Parties/Events

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Future employment prospects with Aon are highly appealing to me. During our internship we learnt a lot about their grad scheme, which offers a lot of support to graduates. Aon struck me as a very supportive company that wants to develop and challenge their employees to reach their highest potential. At the end of my internship I was offered a spot on their grad scheme that I quickly snapped up.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • The social scene between fellow interns was great. Because of our CSR project we spent a lot of time working together which meant we became good friends and would often go for lunch/drinks together. The social scene between the other colleagues was fantastic. I got invited to play netball with some of the other women in my office after work one day and it was an awful lot of fun. Additionally, I was often invited on shopping trips/lunch/dinner trips by some of my team. It made me feel like part of the team and really helped me settle in and enjoy my time at Aon.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • I had chosen to do an internship close to home so the cost of living wasn’t something that affected me as I could live with my parents. Travel around Birmingham is also reasonably priced. At the start of my internship I bought a travelcard allowing me to travel by train, bus or metro throughout the city. Socialising could be expensive but being from the area I knew where to go if you were on a budget.

    5/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The office was in Birmingham city centre, seconds away from local bars and restaurants and a 5-10 minute walk from the majority of the nightclubs – this meant that the Nightlife was fantastic. However, the office was in the business district making it a safe place to work despite being so close to all of this.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • There were often opportunities for me to get involved with things outside of work, most notably the office netball team. I got the opportunity to play for them against other companies in the area. On top of this there were quiz nights and other social events that I was invited to.
