    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • It was a really great experience and prepared me well for my career at Bloomberg, The only downside was that there were a few too many quiet periods since it was summertime and little was going on in the newsroom. My managers were on holiday for several weeks, during which I felt like I did not have enough to do.

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • 5/5

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • When they were around they were very helpful and I felt like they really wanted me to do well. I felt like I could ask any question without feeling stupid and always got detailed explanations. Again, the only problem was that I was too often left alone with few instructions on what to do.

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • The internship was extremely helpful in teaching me about how to detect news, how to write according to the Bloomberg style, and generally about finance and the economy. Since I am now working full-time at Bloomberg, I feel like what I learned during my internship is really helping me to develop quickly on my rotation program.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • I feel like everyone works really well together and gets along also on a personal level. I am happy to be able to call some of my co-workers my friends. At the same time, the environment is also very professional and people are efficient and get things done. Good place to work!

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • I did get sent sent to a lot of interesting events and was given several opportunities to write articles. Generally I felt that my bureau chief always tried to keep an eye out for something for me to do. Nonetheless, there were many times unfortunately when others were to busy to be my mentors or give me work, resulting in me feeling a little lost.

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • I did feel sometimes that the interns based in London were getting more opportunities to develop than I was. For example, they were given free access to the BMC course for taking the BAT, but since I was based remotely I wasn't able to do either of those. It would be nice if Bloomberg could try to come up with ways to motivate remote interns a little more.

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Great! I am extremely happy to have gotten a permanent position at Bloomberg and look forward to working my way up the ladder across the coming years. I think it's great the company offers a way in for entry level candidates and tries to shape them into valuable long-term employees.

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • I think in London this was probably the case, but as I was the only intern in Frankfurt I sometimes felt lonely. Luckily, some other colleagues who had also started as interns took me under their wings and gave me advice on how to do well. As for socializing, I mostly had to find friends outside of work.

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Cheaper than London but quite expensive for Germany! The rent was quite high but the pretty decent intern salary provided by Bloomberg meant I never really felt too stretched for cash. It was a little inconvenient when I had to pay for work-related expenses out of my own pocket and wait till the end of the month to get reimbursed.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • I didn't really go out too much since I didn't know people at first. Having come from bigger cities like London and Berlin, Frankfurt seems to have slightly less to offer, especially in terms of restaurants. Nonetheless it is a good place to live and I liked it more than I expected I would.

    3/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Frankfurt is generally an expat-heavy city and always has international events going on. However, given that I didn't have other interns around me or people that I knew, it was difficult at first to find people to go with. Once I found friends on my own time I was able to enjoy my life outside of work more.
