    The Role

  • 1. To what extent did you enjoy your work placement or internship?
  • I really enjoyed the entire internship experience. It's a very friendly company with lots of opportunities to network around the offices.

    4/5

  • 2. To what extent did you feel valued by your colleagues?
  • I felt valued by my colleagues in that they appreciated the work that I did but there were times where I'd be asking for more work and there just wasn't that much there to do so I had to look for things to do. This was good though as it allowed me more time to meet with colleagues from different departments around Tesco and learn a lot more about how such a big business works.

  • 3. To what extent were you given support and guidance by management/your supervisor(s)?
  • Because of the way the internship is set up there is always someone around to help you out. As an intern you are assigned a Grad buddy which is usually one of the previous interns who is currently on the Grad scheme. I found this really helpful as they had been in your shoes and could relate to how you're feeling, particularly in times of stress. My manager was also very helpful and reliable at all times and also was responsible for the people on the Grad scheme which meant that I got to be a part of the team where everyone was in a similar position.

    5/5

  • 4. How busy were you on a daily basis?
  • This varied throughout the internship based on what project I was working on at the time and the stage of the project. Sometimes I would not have a lot planned during the day and would just get along with tasks but there are a lot of opportunities for you to fill your own time here by either setting up visits to different Tesco sites, setting up meetings with other colleagues, attending a variety of governance meetings or working on the intern project.

    4/5

  • 5. How much responsibility were you given during your placement?
  • I ended up working on three different small projects as opposed to the usual one big project that the other interns had and therefore I don't feel like I had as much responsibility as the others and would have preferred some more.

    3/5

  • 6. To what extent did/will the skills you developed, and training you received, assist you in your degree studies and beyond?
  • A lot of the skills that I learned in this internship will be very valuable to my future such as Excel and Visio skills, networking skills and also just general office skills. We also had a few training days where we learnt how to be more innovative and worked on improving our presentation skills which were both really useful.

    The Company

  • 7. What was the general atmosphere in your office?
  • Always very friendly and happy. A really enjoyable place to work.

    5/5

  • 8. How well organised was the overall work placement or internship set up?
  • Could have been set up slightly better as it took a while for me to receive my work laptop and usernames and I didn't get paid at first when I should have been. Also the intern usually works on one larger project but due to what I think was slightly last minute planning I ended up working on three different smaller projects and therefore gaining less responsibility.

    2/5

  • 9. In terms of personal training and development, to what extent did the company or firm invest in you?
  • Over the course of the 9 weeks we had 4 or 5 different training days in which we learned different lifelong skills. It would have been useful to have been given a short training course in Excel though as you have to learn on the job which is fine it just takes a bit longer.

    4/5

  • 10. What were the perks on your work placement?
  • Flexi Time

    Subsidised Canteen

    Subsidised/Company Gym

    Working from home

    3/5

  • 11. How appealing are future employment prospects within the organisation?
  • Very appealing although I would prefer to work in a different department. The networking opportunities during the internship allowed me to realise that I would be a better fit in a different department.

    5/5

    The Culture

  • 12. Was there a good social scene amongst any fellow placement students/colleagues?
  • Yes definitely! I made some lifelong friends on this internship and had an amazing summer during the internship. We often went for after work drinks - probably 2 or 3 nights a week, and had made plans pretty much every weekend over the summer.

    3/5

  • 13. What was the cost of living and socialising in the area you worked in?
  • Quite expensive. I lived in Hatfield which is a local town which was a bit cheaper but on the weekends and even some weeknights I'd be travelling into London. The travel wasn't too expensive but any form of socialising in London is always expensive.

    3/5

  • 14. What was the Nightlife like in the area you worked?
  • The nightlife in Welwyn Garden City itself is not great. Basically you need to go into London for a good night. We went to Watford once or twice as well which was OK but from Hatfield you need a taxi which can really bring up the costs. The nightlife in London is obviously great but again you just have to be prepared to pay up.

    5/5

  • 15. Were there many opportunities to get involved in activities outside of work?
  • Plenty of opportunities with interns, there wasn't really anything at work but I think that's more the time of the year. They usually have netball and football teams but they only started playing in September so we just missed out.
